Wheel bearings, generic name

Ho Ho Ho!

What is the generic name of P6 wheel bearings?
I thought to put some of my Christmas money aside to buy a complete set of wheel bearings for my 1970 2000SC P6
(with a 2200 engine). Do you know which other bearings fit? Is it a DIY job?
Will having it done professionally break the bank?
Do you have some available for a song?

Happy Christmas!

I just treated some spare metal to a lick of VACTAN; excellent stuff. Looks like plastic coating!

Seasons Greetings,

The original front wheel bearings in my 74 P6B were made in the U.K by SKF. I removed and replaced them a good 18 years ago with a set made in Australia by Timken. Just pop along to your local engineering shop (like CBC bearings here in Sydney) quote the car details and away you go. They were not at the time even remotely expensive, so I don't expect they will break the bank now either.

With the rear bearings though,...you will have a problem as you will need the collapsible spacer, and these are not in my experience available from your normal engineering outlets, although the bearings and oil seals will be..no problem there.

You can obtain the spacers off ebay, they pop up every now and then. Don't even think of re using your original spacers with new bearings, the necessary pre load will not be obtainable and the new bearings will be ruined in a very short space of time.

Compared to modern cars, the rear wheel bearings in the P6 and P6B are of massive proportions, and will quite likely run almost indefinitely.

Ron.

For the front outer:
Timken LM11910 (race) & LM11949 (bearing)
Federal-Mogul Set A-2

Front inner:
Timken LM67010 (race) & LM67048 (bearing) or "Set #6"
Federal-Mogul Set A-6

Excellent,
the front bearings seem to be sorted.
Is there any more lore on the rear bearings? Things to look out for,
the names of the bearings etc.

What is so special about that real wheel bearing spacer?
Can one not make a new one?

Happy Christmas!

There has been a pair on ebay (Last week) but they do keep re-appearing so keep an eye out for them.

If you check your workshop manual - jobs of this type not to be attempted without! - the spacer is not strictly a spacer but rather a collapsing collar designed to limit the preload applied to the bearing. A very unusual design I've not seen repeated anywhere else.

The spacers are available from "allrover" on Ebay. That's the only place he sells. He has several large lockups full of new P6 bits and has had quantities of items reproduced. If he hasn't got any listed just e mail him from within another item or from his profile.

the collapsable collar is a common engineering solution it used to be found a lot in machine tools and stops ham fisted spanners from doing the bearings up to tight. Its only problem if you try to make one is that it has to replecate the exact dimensions otherwise it could also create bad adjustment.
