just looking at the outside. I have bought a "4.6" with su carbs and other mods. Anyway to tell from just looking at the block or anything else ??

Hi Hensen,

There are a number of differences, but the most obvious as Georgie Jim pointed out are the cross bolts along each side of the block just above the sump line. Also have a look for the casting code which appears on the block, as they are completely different.

And of course the engine number, which provided it has not been changed, is a give-a-way.

Looks like you have been ripped off then Hensen as a 4.6 will cost considerably more than a 3.5 in normal circumstances.

Ron.

Just in case there is any confusion, this is what a cross bolt looks like. There are 5 of them on each side.

Got any pics of the engine Hensen?

Hensen,
Because of the interchangability of parts, it's possible to build a 3.5 as a 4.6.

But would you want the extra power running in 3.5 mains?

Buying a second hand engine is always a risk, you don't know what you are getting, especially from the famous Bay.

Possibly the engine you got was worth what you paid, certainly hope so.

Jim.

Personally, I would be wanting my money back.

It implies that it is a 4.6, and it isn't. That is false advertising, obtaining money through dishonesty.

Ron,
Totally agree, but the seller could claim he gave the capacity as 4.6, not the "name" 4.6.
This could still be construed as false advertising, but may be hard to prove.

Still worth a punt, if Hugo feels he was misled.

Have opened an Ebay case to get money back, including 250 quid spent on petrol etc. However, seller is on holiday in Turkey for a week. So, will have to wait till he gets back.
