Weber 500 - Rebuild or Replace

Hi all,
due to an increasing work load (that could end abruptly!), away from home, I still have got no further in sorting out my weber starting issue. The car refused to start again saturday so I decided a rebuild and and new jets was the solution. It also needed a fuel banjo, air filter and housing. I decided to price the parts on ebay from the uk, as well as a new carb, not cheap! Then I sent a list of parts as follows to my brother in the states:

Edelbrock 1404 : Performer 4 barrel 500cfm carb with manual choke ($259)
Edelbrock 8089 : 3/8” inlet /5/8” fuel line banjo
Edelbrock 1464 : Selection of setup springs
Edelbrock 1423 : .086 Jets (pair)
Edelbrock 1421 : .080 Jets (pair)
Edelbrock 1436 : 68/57 rods
Edelbrock 1436 : 62/52 rods
Edelbrock 1221 : 14” X 3” chrome air cleaner
Edelbrock 1477: Carb rebuild kit
I based the jet/rod sizes on information supplied by Richard and Graham in my previous post - thanks lads.
Bottom line is the new carb (with all the necessary fittings above) would cost $335 (262 euro), and a rebuild $110 (86 euro). My mother is in the states on holidays at the moment and could bring the lot home, or my brother can ship through his company. He is currently checking to see if he can improve on the prices. For $33.99 extra I could get the bare rebuild kit as well and sell on my old carb as well. What do you think??

Did you get the heat insulator gasket? part 9266, this made an improvement to driving even with the below mentioned faulty electric pump

an up date on my 500 carb is that I have solved my hot restart problems, cause of fault was my electric petrol pump, reverted to the mechanical AC unit and problem like the fuel vapourized.

In the process of sorting every thing I reset float levels and reset idle screws.

I knew I'd forgotten something! :oops: . Just revised the price ablove, had left the cost of the rebuild kit in the new carb price, so it would now cost $335 dollars, will mail my brother the price of the gasket as well now. What do you think, new or a quick rebuild? Am I covered from a jet an rod point of view for a standard 3.5?

The 500 has a reputed hot restart problem and I was willing to buy into that also, however with my revised fueling method I would say that I have zero problems on restart, I would suggest in the light of my newly gained experience that looking at other factors may provide an answer to your problems. I can't remember but did you have an electric pump under bonnet or possibly a non standard fuel line layout or some other modifacations in that area?
But most certainly do the heat insulator gasket first before any rash spending.

thanks for your replies. In response to your posts, I have a different problem to what you both experienced. My car has only once had a hot starting issue (when it was overheating after 45min in traffic, addressed with a rad flush), my issue is starting after a week or more of standing. I replaced the entire system except the tank when I fitted the weber. This consists of an 8mm inner diameter braided hose from the reserve outlet on the tank to a boot mounted facet cube pump (4psi), 8mm copper pipe from the boot, along the original route under the car, rising up to a filter king on the bulkhead. See below, please excuse the state of the engine bay, this was taken during the LT77/Weber conversions :oops: .

The fuel lines, as you can see, were kept away from the exhaust. I think though that I'll move the filter king to the position Richard has it in his car, behind the power steering resevoir. So hard hot starting not an issue, It just refuses to start after a lay up. Once started once it can restart without problems for up to a week, and runs well. However, there is also a little staining on the carb and manifold near the spindles, leading me to believe i might have a weep here as well.
