hi all,wat do you prefer, wheel on the boot or not on the boot?was thinking of taking mine off the boot of the v8 but cant decide.

Ooh! That's a tricky question.

I like the space having it on the lid creates in the boot - I always did like carrying the kitchen sink about with me. And it's a real iconic talking point for the general public.

But I do prefer the look of the car without it. Providing I can stick wih the attractive shield badge on the blanking plate.

Difficult.

hi ,i was just looking on ebay at a boot with mounting kit , mine is in boot , i think its one of those things that goes back to your childhood , rover p6 s had a wheel on the boot and no other car did , we probably had a dinky toy with one on the boot , its probably safe to junk the wheel altogether and replace it with a can of tyreweld , et headrests or teardrop headrests is one better than the other , matter of personal choice , it will be interesting to see at the national rally wwhat is more popular, i will be bringing flu from ireland so look out shall i wear a bell to warn of the lurgy , rich

In my eyes the spare mounted on the boot is not a good look, not to mention the increase in fuel consumption especially at highway speeds that will result from the less than aerodynamic position.

As a plus it will free up boot space, but the P6 has very limited space for storage compared to modern cars, so given the above I would rather leave it in the boot.

I'm not a fan of the boot mount, but it is quite iconic.

The badge looks good in the middle of the boot though, I'm not sure if I would drive my own car around with the wheel on there though.

When Rhys was little he used to sit in the boot at shows. The thought of the boot lid with wheel coming down on someone leaning into the boot accidentally isn't good.

Cheers
Nick

I leave the spare in the boot most of the time for the reason Ron gives

and I use my car every day.........plus I do like the clean line with the badge as the centrepiece.

However, I always fit it to the boot for shows because it is such an iconic look :D

Spare on boot? For me it's not a 'no', it's a 'hell no'. And when I get my car painted, the bootlid will be changed for one without the badge. Can't use the rear view mirror when the sun is shining.

I'm not a fan, I prefer the uncluttered look, I'm not a fan of overiders, badge bars or fog lamps either.

Same here - apart from the overiders; I like them.

When I first got Sparky, he had some huge round fog lights which made him look like a subaru. They came off very quickly and the overiders went back on.

I still have them if anyone wants to make me an offer though 8) (glass is cracked on one of them)

I now have a boot lid with a spare wheel attachment and like the look of it with the badge on. It would be useful if I needed any extra boot space, but I would assume would be a bit of a pain for seeing out of the back. The wheel cover doesn't fit all the way over the 205s either :(

Hello Brian,

Your stunning Rover does indeed look better without the spare on the boot.

Must admit I don't mind the badge on the boot and the over riders I quite like, although in the case of the former my Rover never came with one.

Ron.

I like both but I am always impressed with a nice badge on the lid which you can't see with the wheel fitted.

Hi,

I guess it probably only matters to me but the car actually feels different driving hard on the loose with the wheel standing up in the boot compared to lying down (not as big an effect as full tank vs near empty but I think it's definitely there) so I would guess that having it way up on the top of the boot would make this even worse.

So no I won’t be fitting a boot mounted spare wheel :) spare wheel currently strapped tight to the boot floor and sometimes even removed for some tests.

Tim

My family or myself have never had one with the boot mounted spare wheel, so I can't really comment on personal experience.
From an aesthetic view only, I prefer without. I do like the look of the boot mounted badge however. The ones Josephp6man was having redone look fantastic.

For me it all depends.........

When using the car for a weekend away, I don't like cluttering up the inside of the car by stacking luggage on the back seat. Couple that with the amount of stuff my Wife packs for an overnight stay, and there is no way a standard boot will take it (yes, it really is that much). We did manage it once with putting the spare on the boot floor, then fitting a Rover false floor - it gave the full width of the boot and still had room for a suitcase, but if we want to take a cool box... then there is not enough height.

So....... last winter I fitted a boot mount and now weekends away are happy weekends, plenty of room for her "stuff" and an uncluttered interior.

The badge is smart too, so for me there is no argument - stick it on the boot when you need the space, and in the boot when you don't.

at least you then have the option...

Which is pretty much the reason why the kit is there in the first place........

This was exactly my thoughts on this.
