Vacuum advance/retard unit

Hi all,
Ref, the vacuum advance retard unit fitted to the distributor on the V8 engine which operates from the manifold, does anyone know how to check this item for correct operation, would I be correct to presume that when I rev the engine I would be able to see the small "connecting arm" move in and out slightly, any help/advice would be very much appreciated

Check there is a vacuum by running the engine with your finger over the end of it.

Take the cap off and suck the end of the pipe and see if the plate moves in the dizzy.

Move the plate by hand top see if the springs are stuck.

Or pop it round when you have a few minutes

Hello Dave,

No, you won't see any movement if you do that. As Richard mentioned, you need to suck on it or you can try and blow through it. In case of the latter, if you can then the module has perished. Vaccum modules have a rubber diaphragm within, and these will typically perish after 5 or so years. The module will then require replacement.

Thanks for the advice fellas,
I'll try all these suggestions, I think the unit that's on now has been on about 7 years and it wasn't new then, it is a spare that I just happen to have, next question will be, where is a good place to get a new unit if I need one?
Best regards
