V8 master cylinder arrangement

Hi,

Wonder could someone do me a favour and e-mail me some pictures of the clutch master cylinder set-up from a V8 car. I’m converting an Auto to SD1 5sp manual and I’ve most of the conversion done, i.e. gearbox in, rear mount sorted etc…. I’ve even got the pedal box in but I’m struggling to sort out the master cylinder under the bonnet, I’m convinced there are more brackets needed than I got off the donor V8S.

Please PM me if you can help.

Thanks

Tim

If you search through "Vaultsman"s posts you should find the pictures he posted when he renewed his master cylinder and set up all the clutch links correctly at the pedal, master cylinder, and the arm on the gearbox. You should find everything you are looking for there.

Hi,

Thanks for the pointer, I’ve had a look at his posts and find one called “3500S Clutch” and indeed there are some pictures of the master cylinder bracket but unfortunately none that I can see with it actually bolted to the car. I have the pedal box fitted with the bell crank protruding into the engine bay beside the steering box and I have the master cylinder mounted in the bracket shown in his pictures, his pictue below. I don’t really see how this bracket bolts to the car which makes me think I’m missing some sort of bracket the attaches to the side of the steering box? As I say I’ve only ever seen the Auto car I’m working with so don’t know what the manual set-up looks like.

Thanks

Tim

I can't think of anything other than the bracket shown in the picture, and the bellcrank lever you say you've already got fitted to the end of the rod from the pedal. Next time I'm down the garage I'll try and remember to have a look at mine and see if there's anything else there that I've forgotten.

I did this conversion a couple of years ago and you will need to weld a plate in to bolt the top two bolts into. The auto cars dont have it. You need to drill a fresh hole for the lower mounting bolt and then the upper mounting plate essentially boxes in the side of the well under the steering box. I did mine with the motor and steering box out as I was converting to pas at the same time. Not sure how good the access will be with all those bits fitted.

Hi,

Weld, fabricating and drilling!!! now I really need to see a picture!!! At least I'm not going mad!!!

Thanks for the info.

I'll see if I can get some pics tomorrow if you like.

Mine was converted from an auto, to a 5 speed Lt77, but it wasn't me who converted it.

Do you need pictures from under the bonnet, or from inside, both?

Not a lot of point in doing that, as the one thing I had forgotten when I wrote it was that you're converting an auto to manual, so looking at my 5 speed "S" won't be of any use at all........

OK, found some pictures. I took these pics of a very grubby (and totalled) 3500S to assist me with my conversion. Hopefully you can see through all the grime but the key points are the bolt poking through the large brass nut in front of the bellcrank which is the lower mounting and the plate welded in above for the top two mounts. I have marked the approximate weld point with a red dotted line.

And here's a slightly different angle to help you get your bearings.

Good luck!

Hi,

Can’t thank-you enough for these pictures they are exactly what I needed, having seen them it will be simple enough to fabricate something, without them it would have been difficult.

Thanks again,

Tim

OK, now I need a little help here, please.
I have finally got around to fitting the correct master cylinder to my formerly auto V8. I managed to find a manual pedal box in Cape Town, but it was off a LHD car and I used my old auto pedal box and fitted the pedals across after adjusting the pedals to suit a RHD setup.
What I don't have is the bellcrank that actuates the clutch, so if anyone out there has any pictures of a pedal box with the bellcrank and how it fits to the pedals and what the whole show looks like, I would be most greatful. I am going to have to fabricate the gubbins I will need, so piccies need to be detailed and from a few angles if possible.

Thanks in antici............pation.
