hi all what is the differents between the p6 heads and the sd1 do the sd1 run onunleaded fine because i am thinking of boring out my space engine and putting on the sd1 heads

Hello Gareth,

Comparing P6B and SD1 cylinder heads,...the latter have larger inlet and exhaust valves and require long reach spark plugs (19mm threads). Valve springs are single. Inlet and exhaust ports are essentially the same size as the P6B heads.

Cylinder heads fitted to engines for the Australian market from 1986 onwards were unleaded compatable. I cannot say what the situation is within the U.K regarding the date.

Rover cylinder heads made prior to this date may or may not be compatable with unleaded fuel without the use of a VSR additive. The information from Land Rover and from fuel companies is conflicting, so if in doubt use the additive.

Hello Gareth,

do you have a pair of SD1 heads? If not, I have a pair you could have for a modest sum.

Regards, John.

Should the OP not be interested there is another regular poster on here who may well be interested if they could be bought and sent for a reasonable sum if you were prepared to do that.

I fitted a pair to Thunderdog back in the 80's as the research I did back then, IIRC, showed that the P6 heads when taken to stage one were 9% more efficient than standard ones.

SD1 heads were 12% more efficient.

It certainly made a difference :)

harveyp6,

the SD1 heads I have are from my brother's early SD1 that "dropped a rod" many years ago - I have stripped the valves from one head and, although the wear is not too bad, I would say that they (both) need an overhaul, i.e new guides, valves lapped and new springs. I don't want a lot of money for them. They are far too heavy to consider postage - A courier may be possible, but if you are within travelling distance I would recommend collecting as I have a myriad of P6 parts (new and used), books, brochures etc collected during 20 years of P6 ownership.
If you are still interested send me a pm.

Regards, John.
