two sump plugs ??

My 1972 2000TC also has 2 sump plugs. Its a UK spec car and the history file shows this is its original engine.

They all have two sump plugs, well certainly at that age anyway (pretty sure my 1964 car only has one...)

No idea why, but I'm not complaining. :D

My old 68 TC had two plugs but my 72 SC has only one.
Could it possibly be that the TC had a slightly different oil pickup and there was a difference in sump shape? Therefore needing two plugs to completely drain the sump?
IIRC there is one fore and one aft, could it be that the oil could be drained equally as well if the car was lifted from the front or the rear?
Could this be a Rover thing for speeding up service times?, the service books did stipulate service times to charge to the customer so draining out of two holes could quicken things up.
Could one of them be a take off/return for something which was an export item or something which never made it onto the car in final production? Maybe a heater element for scandinavian countries for winter driving?
Speculation, but food for thought.

Our 1972 P6's original 2000SC engine also had 2 sump plugs, as did the 70/71 2000TC unit it got fitted with during it's last 6 years of life.

Is so that when some butcher of a grease monkey rounds off the nut with a pair of vice grips you can still do an oil change on it by using the other sump plug. This is what happened to my Rover 2000 TC.

James.
