Three Thousand Five V8 spec and thoughts

I love that engine stand!

The cylinder heads are all pretty much interchangable. The ones on the Range Rover and SD1 from about 1976 onward had larger valves than the P6 one and were the same until about 1995 when they lost the outer row of head bolt just below the spark plugs. It should be easy to find a pair to bolt straight on.

Hi James .
I Know someone else who after working too long and too hard rebuilding her motor put those baffles back on the wrong way round . Easily done in haste when your tired . I would never admit to it on the forum though   .
I would imagine someone has been in there before rather than it left the factory that way . Well over 40 years is a long time to expect no ones been in there before ! possible but unlikely . I would imagine no harm has been done , if you turn the motor over a couple of revolutions dose the tappit hit the baffle ? That'll give you an idea of where the noise is coming from . I would be surprised if it's from there , that material is quite brittle and likely shattered back from where it made contact with the tappit . Still possible though .
I would be running a magnet all around the top of the engine to find every last piece , then try to piece it all together on the bench to ensure you have the whole thing ( all be it in bits ) out of the motor .
As Testrider says i'd be tempted to look for a set of SD1 or later heads , and have them chemically cleaned while i was that far into the thing , nothing easier than working on a engine that's on a stand !
Edit , i know it's easy to sit here and spend someone else's money :D

IIRC when they're fitted the wrong way around they can give uneven running/misfire at idle which disappears as you rev up because they stop the valve closing fully, but there's no permanent problems that I can remember after they're put back the correct way around.

Harvey,
My car was very uneven just after starting. used to shake about a lot like it wasn't on all 8 some times but disappeared after a moment. Wonder if this was the culprit.

Many thanks every one, Testrider and Stina. I do agree with you with regards to fitting SD1 heads and the benefits but for now i will keep what i have. I want to get the original engine and parts running to the best of its abilities get a power reading and go from there. I am thinking of buying a similar period of caravan in the future so i can go a bit further a field to shows.... providing i find a towbar. So, a 3.9 camshaft might happen then. The S1 V8 is special to me and given it has only done 43000 miles i don't want to replace half of the engine. Don't mind doing stuff that isn't seen :)

Cheers Ron, that is the news i have been waiting for :) Yeah i won't be doing much more i think, might get some of the thick areas of old oil out of the heads very carefully but will not be using any chemicals or anything. I want to be able to eat my dinner off the outside tho :)

Thanks everyone you are a huge help.

James

I like the idea of getting a baseline power reading from the engine when its all stock, and seeing what gains you have made.

I have 10 bolt heads on mine, and most people wouldn't even notice the fact that half the bolts are missing (they would be too busy wondering why I have no HT leads on the dizzy :D ).

SD1 heads would give you no hint at all that anything had been sympathetically upgraded, so no worries there. 8)
