The Guvnor

Every time I look at this car, either on the forum or down at the yard, I really want to stage a car chase with Wedgie and this one. I think the colours would be fantastic!

Catboy; up for a photo shoot when she's back on the road?

Lee,

Not sure yet.. might have to pick Nick's brains re suitable spots, but I still want to do one on the bank at Brooklands.

We'll figure something out and possibly plan for March when the weather improves.. which will give Nick and Duncan time to get your car back on the road again ;)

There is a nice photo of an S reg 3500 met traffic car on Flickr ( very rare-the one the vanguards model was based on) , I've also got a VUC S plate photo of a blue met car ( with Micky mouse lights etc)

Hi Andy

The records at Gaydon show the car was ordered as a police car by the met, so wasn't a case of using up old stock.

She was made in early December 1976, the delivered to the met along with a blue area car in I think February 1977.( I have a pic sent to me from the met museum of a blue area car reg no VUC 276S)
She was then kept in storage till February 1978.

The factory records show that these two cars were the last police spec p6s to be made and I'm told by Nick Dunning that even though the SD1 v8 was being made you may have been offered a v8 p6 when supply problems held up the delivery of SD1s

Her spec is interesting as she has the uprated suspension mounts, alternator etc , but came with vinyl roof and power steering and sundym glass.

Regarding the wheel trims, she was delivered with Denovo run flat wheels and came with the fully carpeted boot. These wheels were taken off while in service and replaced with standard wheels and tyres and I assume the S trims were fitted as these what seems to be standard fitment on met p6s.

I have just been accepted as a member of PCUK so you will find me on the forum looking for the correct bits to get her back to met spec!

The first bit of my post was a quote From another member which I was replying to .

That's great , look forward to seeing it ,

Nick, Northolt is the venue for MRD which I think stands for major repair depot. It is one of the few in house garages that the Met still owns. it is located in West London near to the A40. As a young police officer I went there once and saw them preparing an armour plated Rolls Royce Silver Shadow for painting! Cars were issued from there for service to the rest of the Met. Walworth was another such garage. The garages that the Met still owns and there are n't many are used to service covert vehicles. The car you have is one such vehicle and were known as Q cars or Q boats. This is a reference to civilian boats that were in fact heavily armed naval vessels used to attack the enemy in wartime in particular U boats.

Hi Glen,

Is the Walworth garage still there, and was it part of walworth police station?

Went past the current Walworth station and it looks new.

Any info much appreciated.

Back when your P6 was operational, the nearest nick to Walworth garage was Carter Street. Next nearest nick would have been

The Borough. Both were part of M divisions patch.

The Walworth garage that I pointed out to Nick from the service sheet/log was based just off Hampton Street if memory serves me.

Walworth Road nick was expanded with a new pale brick building with a walled courtyard/parking lot behind at the end of the '80s or in the early '90s, I used to pass it daily on my way to college at the LCP, whether by bike along Walworth Rd or by rail, which runs right behind it. I never saw any cars being worked on, just Astras and Sherpas and the like coming and going on daily business. I suspect the garage was closed by the early '90s? Or maybe the nick is at Carter Street, and the garage was a bit nearer to the Elephant and Castle roundabouts, off Hampton Street, a cyclist's shortcut, as MadAnt suggests?
Going off topic a bit, back in the mid '90s when I lived in S. London I remember seeing a red 3500S outside the Fire Station on Queens Road, Peckham, and wondering if it had been a Fire Chief's car? It wasn't lettered and didn't have blue lights on top, but it looked the part!
Even further off topic, does anybody remember an older fella with a couple of railway arches (Ilderton Rd or Jarrrow Rd?) in South Bermondsey in the '80s, who used to have loads of P6 spares, especially heaps of panels all neatly stored?
Sorry!
How is the Guv'nor coming along anyway? Or ist it done and 'in service' again?

This is the old Carter Street station that I mentioned.

As I moved away donkeys years ago not sure if its operational, but it was the only nick between Borough and Camberwell back in the 70's and early 80's along that stretch of road.

The garage that was off Hampton street has long gone from looking at Google maps now. traveling South from the Elephant & Castle down Walworth Street as you rounded the right hand bend there was a row of shops on the right (including an old driving school call Veron Davey), you then had Hampton Street and then there was a old petrol station forecourt before the next junction. For years the old petrol station had a huge tyre from an earth mover chained up to one of it's lamp posts.

Hampton Street used to lead up to the rail yard were during the War my father and his brothers used to go and collect coal that had fallen off the wagons that were unloaded from the yard there.

We'll the old girls going for her MOT early next week.

Had an issue with the gearbox just before Xmas, failed torque converter,

Kenlow fan, electronic ignition, and new break callipers now fitted.

Popped down the the workshop just before Xmas to look at the progress, really pleased with the new engine sounds fantastic!

On the Police fit front, started to get the bits together.

I now have the two tone air horns, winkworth bell, Met police aerial, storno personal radio and the holy grail for this car, a STC inter force radio

Just need a Pye Westminster radio ( sourced a Pye Whitehall radio but this is not correct),and we are about there.

Once Nick has done a few weeks shake down I should get my hand on her.

Wow, what an interesting project. Great reading about the history. Good luck with the MOT next week and I look forward to seeing more photos. :D

Looking forward to getting her, will post some before and after pics once she's had her respray.

Wondered about getting some black and white pics taken around her old patch in London. New old pictures if you like

Just a quick update folks. We are inching towards completion. Today I ceremonially put the wheeltrims back on. Some stuff still to attend to but we may see the MOT this week.
