The cuts are coming....

Ok so the cuts sorry economies are coming, appart from the BBC which is being discussed elsewhere, what are our top wastes of cash ?

I'll kick off with the stupid idea to allow local residents to setup their owns schools and we pay for it. What is that about ? why not use that cash to improve the schools in place, or just don't spend the cash. There is already far to much choice for parents, kids should just go to the school nearest and the goverment should make sure that all schools are to a similar standard. Simple.

I always am surprised by cars the police drive. Some of them are using BMW X3s and X5s round here. seems like a complete waste of money when they say they're underfunded. They arent good high speed cars and they're rubbish off road....

100% Agree. I bet they would save a lot using lesser model cars and buying up the two year old trade in's seing most police cars get hammered. I don't know if the X5 or X3 is build in the UK but if not then they should choose cars that are.

they're definitely not built in the uk... but, i could understand a police force having 1 nissan gt type car for high speed chases or a couple of discoverys or defenders for off road. These are effectively useless in either scenario as far as i can see...

I think they have them because of the amount of kit they have to carry to cover most
eventuality's.

Again though, if that was the aim, a fast load lugger is a volvo v70 or a 5 series tourer, an x5 costs more and is less use, and uses more fuel surely?

Skodas, kias, hyundais - all good reliable cars, some fast, all shapes and sizes. All better value for money....

West Yorkshire Police have a few High End Skodas....
....they don't have shift! :D

South Yorkshire have a scooby, yet still can't catch the B&^$^(s who burgled my house though.

Wasn't it in the newspapers sometime last week that one police force had to use an SD1 V8 as there were no other cars available?

Or central government could do a bulk order of Nissan Micra's and Honda Jazz for the Panda cars, some Civic R types for the pursuit cars and some Honda Accord estates for the motorway stuff. Then they'd be supporting British jobs as well!

Chris

Unfortunately the prevailing political ideology say intervention is wrong even when it's the right thing to do...

pragmatism is in short supply where government departments are concerned!

Not exactly correct. The SD1 and two others were on their way to a show when the call came in.. so they volunteered to use it as no others were available.

Slightly different than saying that they had to use it.. and the car is still fully legal, so I don't see what's wrong with using them.

Fighting wars we shouldn't even be involved in. Everything else pales into insignificance.

I stand corrected.

I wasn't meaning that it was wrong of them to use the SD1, just how 'retro' it must have felt to be using one, and also that this is a (mainly P6) Classic Rover Forum!

Sorry to correct you Willy, but the cost of fighting that sort of war is peanuts in the grand scheme of things.

It's to late but we can't afford the Olympics
If our athletes are as good as our footballers , there's no much point in entering anyhow

Maybe Dave - but it must be up to 10 Billion by now and that would go a fair way to reducing the debt. Also, it does leave a bad taste in the mouth when the UK goes to war to satisfy Bliar's need to brown his nose with the US only to be turned on and tossed to the vultures when BP have a problem - ok it's big problem but our 'Friends' soon turn on us when they want to.

Shame our Goverment doesn't slag the US off for destroying the world economy.

Would get off my soapbox now, but I've had to sell it

Having spent 23 years in the armed forces it's nowhere near that. Besides, that money has been spent over the last 10 or so years and the money all comes from the defence budget anyway which is allocated for just such an event as we are fighting in Afghanistan. Now bankers bonuses over the last one year must be close to your figure and everything else pales into insignificance in the face of that.

Now we're talking! I can't believe how bad the US govt has been over this. I was chatting to a few guys who work up at Sullum Voe in Shetland and they were saying the rig is operated by a US company for BP. But of course the US govt has never done anything to upset the rest of the world

Best I sell my soap box too :D

Someone on a radio phone in show mentioned Union Carbide as being a disaster where the Americans have not owned up to their responsibilities Anyone know a bit more ?

I'd forgotten that - fine friends they've turned out to be
