Half awake this morning I spotted a white 3500 auto BPO ###L ?

It was parked outside a scrap yard in Greenock so i was going back for a look when the guy pulled out and drove away.

Car looked good. There was a badge bar on the front.

Nice to see they out and about especially in the frost.

The car is on ebay and I was well off on the registration and it is a 2000 not 3500.

Hi arthuy, I bought the rover from ebay at the beginning of June, the seller in greenback sold it to someone near girvan and I bought it off him. He had 11 other cars (some nice stuff, lotus Cortina, genuine tr8) and needed space he said. With hindsight I think he realized what he had and wanted rid!

It started life as a tc but has been converted to an sc at some point. It was most definitely a spur of the moment buy, I had an empty lock up and I've always fancied one of ese. The drivers floor/sill area is pretty bad, someone spent more time bodging it than it would have taken to do it properly, same side at the rear under the seat is a bit iffy too where it joins the sill, fortunately the near side looks solid. Mechanically it is leaking oil from front and rear seals and ran a bit rough when I viewed it, the seller replaced the carb float but didn't set it up properly (he gave me the old one as proof), once this was done it didn't help much. A compression test showed zero on number one so I am fairly certain the head gasket has failed. The interior has had colour change as some of the black vinyl pieces have been sprayed from brown, the trims on the b pillars are still brown. The seats are box pleat orange with black head rests, gold carpet and a red parcel shelf! Not sure if this is 70s BL use what we have policy in force or just a miss mash. Interior is very clean regardless. Almost no rust on the outside, wings look fresh all round except one, boot floor is solid although it has been re sprayed in the original ivory white. It came with 15 previous owners on the v5, a Haynes manual and a couple of old mots( think the last one might be a bit soft given the rust in the floor!!), no other history unfortunately.

I also have a triumph herald so not sure how long I plan on keeping it, mot runs out in December so once the head gasket is done I will start on the welding and see what else it needs for a new ticket.

Oh well, we live and learn!

Welcome to the forum John. I reckon a Herald and a P6 will compliment each other perfectly (I have a Vitesse that's currently 'resting').
Unfortunately you might have a shock when you start buying parts as you've been spoilt with the Triumph. While everything is available, prices can be quite a bit higher. But it's worth it though, a nicely sorted P6 is a real pleasure to run.

Thanks for the welcome willy, as you say I am spoilt with the triumph. My herald is a 1200 convertible on an F plate, the difference is staggering given they were released only 4 years apart, the rover feels like a modern car in comparison with its independent suspension and discs all round. I have already bought a couple of parts from Wins int and have found them quite good so I think they will be my supplier of choice unless you can recommend anyone else. Only problem is they closed yesterday for 2weeks holiday just when I needed to order a head gasket!

Wins are excellent, but so is Mark Gray (MGBD Parts), and there's also JR Wadhams so you shouldn't be held up too long.
Another useful source is this forum - 'wants' threads often bear fruit.

Hi John,
Where do you stay?

mark gray will be able to supply the gaskets. I bought some from him just to have a spare set.

With the head gasket the rubber o ring is important or you get oil running down the back of your engine block.

Lots of p6 go crusty on the sills but are one of ther easiet cars to weld.

Hi Colin, I thanks for the advice, I think I will be on the phone to them tomorrow to get one ordered. I have a friend that can weld so it looks like I will be getting a few lessons shortly!

I stay in Ayr, I used to see a mustard coloured late model 2200 locally but haven't seen it in a couple of years, hope it is still about. I have also been told of a red 3500s near me that has been laid up for a while too so might ask about. About a month ago a brown 2200tc appeared parked on a main road in the town, it hasn't moved since but looks ok, the house it is parked outside has a large drive full of cars so I'm wondering if this is a new addition or something from the back of the drive that has been moved to clear space.

Sounds interesting. Norman who lives in ayr used to have a red 3500 which had sd1 alloys. But that is sold now.

I sometimes see a brown 2000 parked behind wilkinsons so there is a few around.

LOL!!! Not exactly what I wanted to read!

The rough running turned out to be a burnt valve, now sorted but still running really rich. Currently at a friends in Dunoon where it will be welded and sent for an mot, hopefully shouldn't need anything else ( famous last words...)

I'm afraid to ask, but tell me the story of your ownership...
