Hi All,

Got a recon starter. Just wasnt going to get time to pull the other one apart.

Problem is the solenoid has different connections...

I've taken some pics. Anybody got any idea what should go where?

Thanks

Rich.

The LT terminals have notation cast into the plastic, which can just be seen in you pic, but not quite made out on my steam powered monitor.

This one should help you:
The coil feed is used in case you have a ballast ignition.

So somewhere there should be an indicator for ignition on the old one too? OK - I'll have a good clean and see if i can spot it :)

Did you actually use the ballast ignition feed on your car? If not, and you can see no spare connector on the solenoid, it may just have been a male spade connector on the starter terminal post of the solenoid that went missing for donkey's years...

no ballast, but the connections are all used - both little spades, and the big one from the battery...

The missing one is hiding under the thick wire on your old one. The fuzzy shot of the back with the thick wire removed shows where it should be; pretty much opposite the other small wire post.

Also looks like you are replacing an M45G with a 3M100PE or similar.

Thanks guys :) Had a bit of a clean round the old solenoid today, and there is some text on the old one. On one side it says STA, and the other side it looks like it says S109. I'm going to try cleaning the wires up under the car next. According to the wiring diagram the ign wire should be white and purple and the relay wire should be white and brown. Currently they're a nice shade of oil covered black....

It's annoying because the old solenoid isn't standard, the new one is.

I dont suppose anybody with an S1 V8 knows which one is the straight connector and which is the 90 degree connector?

Thanks,

Rich.

Given that both spades are 12V from what i can see, if i get it wrong and try it will it cause any issues?

Thanks,

Rich

Hi, usually the two small spade terminals are different sizes, but no matter, just put the two
wires on any way round then try the key. It will either work or not, if it doesn't then change
them round. No nuns or kittens will be harmed. You could try removing or protecting the
spade terminal on the battery terminal side, it looks a bit vulnerable sticking out ready to
catch a stray spanner being wielded in the future.

brilliant that's just what i needed to hear :D

Thanks - No excuse for the V8 not running today now :)

Success! ANd you cant be mad with a car for too long when it makes 'that' noise.... It may only be as fast as a 1.6 fiesta, but it sounds fast :D
