Standard P6B Timing Cover - Helicoil kit

As above. Cover condition not too important as we're going to cut it up & use it as a jig for drilling & helicoiling three of the waterpump bolt holes on the ex-aircon car. Local-ish would be handy but if anyone further afield has one then postage can be investigated. Around the Midlands next month too so collection is a possibility.

Also, if anyone has a helicoil kit they no longer have a use for then let me know. Or any advice on kits successfully used in the past will be welcome.

Thanks.

The idea AIUI, is to have a decent thickness of metal to guide the drill in straight & central. That would have to be a hefty chunk of steel to give the same depth as an old cover will. People upgrade to SD1 a lot so there must be some redundant standard covers knocking about.

It's an option but l'll wait & see if there's a sacrificial cover which will be a ready made jig, a bolt on & forget kind of thing.

Thanks for the link.

Gary,

Are the 3 holes all for the long 5/16" UNC bolts? If so, then yes I have a Helicoil kit you can borrow....I would like it back when you've finished though - minus the 3 inserts of course! :)

And the moon must be in conjunction with something or other to make this your lucky day - as Rich rockdemon should still have this, as I loaned it to him a few months ago. (Rich - yes?) so you should be able to collect it if/when you pick the timing cover up.

Stan

PS: I don't have a kit for the 1/4" bolts, I'm afraid.

Thanks very much for your kind offer, Stan. It must be kismet.

I'll check with Harvey as he's the technical workhorse charged with griping & carping his way around the fleet while carrying out various fixes almost as fast as the eye can follow, muttering curses & oaths as he goes.
Perhaps he'll see this post from the depths of his anorak & confirm or dispel the length of the bolts which enter the damaged holes.

5/16" UNC is the required thread size. The length has nothing to do with it. (As far as the bolts are concerned....)

Sounding good. I've got quite a bit of collecting to do on our weekend away. My good lady wife is well impressed.

You sure do know how to show a girl a good time......

If you have stripped the three holes why are you bothering to drill them? The helicoil tap will work directly in the stripped thread hole, they are designed that way for holes inaccessible to a drill. I've cleaned the remainder up in the past by running the drill bit through using a suitable tap drive by hand as the aluminium is very soft.

The bolts haven't stripped, they've snapped flush, so the idea is to use an old timing cover as a drill guide to keep the drillbit true in the centre of the remains of the bolt.

Sorted.

Many thanks to Eight of Them for sending me an old Range Rover cover.

And to Stan for the loan of the helicoil kit picked up from Richard who was storing it.

Just got to do the job now. Thanks in advance to Harvey.
