Speedo gear BW35

This is a matter of curiosity more that anything else, and I'll bet that Harvey can answer it.

The speedo gear on the output shaft of my BW35 box is a slip fit. Nothing appears to hold it in place save the surface tension of the lube. How come? I notice that my speedo is kinda bouncy, though that could be in the cable or the meter itself.

I am tempted to slather some of that Loctite bearing anchor stuff on the shaft to nail the gear down, but can be dissuaded by good advice.

It's clamped between a step on the output shaft and the rear flange. If the rear flange bolt is loose it can make the speedo waver, but the most common cause is the inner cable needs cleaning and lubricating, and the cable route needs checking.

hi all apologies for hijacking someone's post but how does one lubricate the inner cable as I have a bouncy speedo??

many thanks

Check the routing of the outer cable to make sure it's not kinked. Remove the speedo head from the dash. Remove the speedo cable from the head. Remove the inner cable, clean, check for damage and then lightly greaese the inner cable from the bottom up to about 4-6" from the top. Refit.
