Some points when working with the drive shafts

I've seen more than one v8 version with a clean break right in the middle of the splined shaft length..

Mine have always broken just the splined part off, have seen a shaft with a twisted spline.
Funny thing is i have never broken one when i have been driving them hard, broke them when parking in spaces or reversing.

Hi, All the ones I've had go have had the the part between the start of the splines and where it enters the gear twisted or distorted, and finally breaking when reversing because of the changing direction of torque. Many years ago I was reading an article about how cars used for drag racing are prepared, in it they said they used to either stick a pinstripe or paint one the length of the half shaft. and after every event they would pull the shaft. Once the shaft was wound up a quarter of a turn they would discard it. I've always put the Rovers weakness down to the fact that because they're so short they can't absorb much wind-up and so reach their limit easily.

Hi guys
removed diff shaft from my spare axle and the areas I've had broken are where the black marker pen is on the splines.

Clive that is a significantly better made shaft than my C suffix units. They have two sharp steps in the spline both just beyond your texta mark. yours has one tapered step which would be a lot stronger, What suffix diff is it out of? thanks for the pictures

Hi Mike,
I must admit i have only seen the type Ive listed, and have taken shafts from many diffs over the years.
Diff came out of 1973 3500s suffix B chassis, but on diff there is a suffix E so i think it has been replaced at some time.
Regards,
Clive.

Thanks for the pics Clive.
I wonder if the step on the splines was a more gradual slope it would avoid the tendency for stress fractures at that point in a similar way that putting a longer transition on the anti roll bar slope from hex to round seems to cure those breaking ?

Are you still able to allow me to borrow one for possible evaluation purposes ?

Cheers
Mark
