SD1 heads, alternative valves and valve springs

Are there after-market valves and springs available for the ERC0216 / SD1 heads ? The original ones are really expensive, but I do not know, if the after market parts do have a proper quality.
At the moment I´m polishing the old valves, but they still have pitting. The valve springs I must renew, so I thought of changing the valves also.

I can only assume your heads are very worn or the engine has run very lean to damage the valves. I've 2 sets of land rover discovery heads (same as SD1 heads but with a cut-out for the fuel injectors) and the valves when cleaned up are almost as new. The wear is entirely in the guide - it is this you should check. The wear will be east-west movement across the engine. I don't know if my experience is typical, but its a very "dirty" engine, the inlets had a lot of crud on them.

Have a look at V8 tuners UK site. In fact any of the reputable UK specialist like V8 tuner and RPI will have reliable aftermarket parts as they've built and sold many thousands of heads and components. The only problem area is with the rockers and OEM is seriously expensive. We're talking 60 year old tech so there's no reason with proper quality control that aftermarket parts can't match or exceed the original.

A total overhaul isn't expensive:

SD1 & RR 4.0/4.6 Std Valve springs - V8 Tuner
Rover SD1 STD Valve, Guide and Seal Kit - V8 Tuner

Although it's incorrect to call that a standard SD1 set as it has the later valve stem seals (which actually work).

BTW dont expect huge power gains but it does tend to make the engine a little livelier and revvy (relatively speaking!).

Thanks guys, very helpful advices :) I do not know, why, but I´ve only looked on regular Landrover/RR parts suppliers sites.
Have made photos from an inlet valve, I´ve polished some minutes ago..

Look fine to me. You only need to worry about the edges so you can grind in a seal. On top of the valve doesn't contact anywhere, looks more like wire brush marks to me. Saying that mine do look better than yours. As I said valves are cheap and easy to replace, the guides are more important.

I bought stainless valves from real steel for my sd1 when i had it and these were cheaper than the stock valves .
The original valves are quite roughly finished as yours show and this is how they look new.
Clive .

Real steel do slightly larger valves, 41.4mm inlet & 35.6mm exhaust (std is 39.8mm & 34.4mm). The valve seats need to be recut to the bigger size but if they need refacing anyway it's worth thinking about.
