Hi guys,

Got round to collecting my free SD1 engine and manual LT77 box, only 52k since new but thats only what the chap told me as he was the one who removed it from the car for his cobra but is now using a chevy crate motor.
Anyway from the pics can any body advise if ita an early, mid or late model box, the engine has a cruze control still fitted, the box will going into my car replacing the auto BW35 unit, may sell the engine, I have the manifolds & down pipes, all in good order, all was stored in his mums garage for seveal years.
Cheers damian

You need to look at the bottom right hand side of the 'box to find the serial number stamp. The suffix is the most telling as to it's specification. For my money, its an early 'box (76-82) as it appears to have a cable speedo drive (later ones were electrical). Also, the gear knob is from an early SD1. I can't figure out the bell housing though - it's not SD1, looks more like P6 to me. Any photos of the inside of the bell housing?

Hi guys, thanks for the feedback & yes I should have posted the correct engine & box numbers as below pics, both box & engine are from the same SD1, they were split after removal, cheers damian

10A = SD1 manual engine.

LT77 G23A SD1 2600 Police spec 5 speed

So it looks like a police spec 2600 box fitted with the v8 bellhousing.

Hi Harvey, thanks for your quick update! so police spec, is there much differance between this and the 3500 LT77 or same spec, would the police spec be an 'uprated' version ?
Thanks Damian

Police spec boxes were uprated, but only in so much as they had shot peened gears, and a different reverse idler gear IIRC, none of which should cause any concern even if you hadn't got a police spec box. No differences between the 2600 & 3500 either.

Is the SD1 v8 bellhousing shorter than the v8 Range Rover one?

It looks like it from the pics. I only ask as I have a couple of Rangie v8 LT77's lying around at my parents.

Yep, bellhousing and box are different. 4x4 box has a different output shaft to accommodate the
transfer case. I believe they can be swapped over to the 4x2 shaft, though.
Be worth your while to investigate the input bearing issues if you are opening it up to do the shaft.

Hi Guys,
Been a short while since I've updated anything on here but can anybody tell me what the black plastic plug is on top of the gear box?
I'm hopefully going to get started on the conversion from the clunky BW35 to the LT77 5spd manual end of this month as my winter project, answers on a post card please.
Cheers Damian

Would it be the breather? I was staring blankly at something rather similar on my ZF 4HP22 until it occurred to me what it was.

possibly! looks like there should be a cap that may screw on top, may have had a breather pipe attached it perhaps...

Hi Rich,

Brilliant, thanks for the update! see I can source a cap, fleebay or Rimmer Bros perhaps!

Hows Sparkey doing? Cheers Damian

No problem Damian :)

I was in Somerset last week, I should have popped in for coffee. I would love to see Christine, but better keep an eye on me because those wheels are very tempting 8)

Sparky is running like a dream, and getting better when all those little things that need doing, are done. I am playing with a cold air induction system at the moment which is making him quieter and strangely smoother as well. Just need some more jets and control rods to adjust the carb, as he is running quite rich. Other things to do soon as well, but will put them all on here when I get round to it.

Won runner up at The Yorkshire Rover club's Saltaire rally on Sunday, so pleased with that, although there were only 4 P6s there :?

I have loads of piccies of the inside of the LT77 if you need them, let me know

Richard

Hi Rich,

Glad all is well with the mean machine, congrats on the runner up award, great stuff!
Shame we didnt get to meet when you were in Somerset, give a shout next time as be great to meet up! (I'll hide those cragars  ) love your pet name of Christine  , although it still hasn't repaired itself in any form as yet.
Liking your cold induction set up, reminds me of the Ram-Air options the Yanks had on offer in the golden age of muscle cars :D

Yes please if have various pics then some of the oil pump assembly and front reat seals would be very helpful, as its only covered 55k miles but sat for about 8~9 years then I'm tempted to change the seals, gasgets but in two minds as to do the oil pump or not, working on a budget as usual, still need to get all clutch bits, cant remember if its an early non self centering or self centering clutch kit I require, it has the bigger release bearing housing as in the pic on page one, the engine & box numbers are pictured. Would know what year this set is, Pre- May 1985 or post May 1985 for self centering clutch ?

Need a complete pedel box for brake & clutch from 3500s model, dual brake/clutch res, bell crank lever & push rod, bascially the whole nine yard! LOL, I need to fab up and weld a bracket above the fuel reserve tap to mount the clutch master cylinder, would you have any close pics of this area so i can get an idea of where to weld it.

Let me know & I'll email my private email address,

many thanks Richard, cheers Damian
