I have just rebuilt my v8 engine, timing is ok ,engine runs for about 6 seconds then stops .Seems the problem is electrical.Had a puff of smoke from what i believe is a ballast resistor .Can anybody help

Is the igniton the contactless type?

Where is this ballast resistor?

Is it a 12V coil?

Yep SD1 are electronic, but I'm useless in this dept

That's what I thought. (That SD1 were electronic - not that you are useless :D )

Mine has the SD1 electronic and it runs a 12V coil - so why is there a ballast resistor?

hi, the car is a v8 3500 with sdi heads and gearbox, has lucas electonic distributor, i seem to have problems with trying to keep engine running .The timiming is checked at 6 tdc staticaly. It looks as if the ballast resistor under the coil was bypassed with a live red wire to a white and black wire then on to the distributor. the coil and distributor has been checked and sparking well. would appreciate any help or a wiring diagram .i .would like to take it to the enfield pagent if possible at the end of the month.

HI

What are the symptoms ? Does it just cut out or cough and splutter ? Does it restart easily ?
Are the plugs wet and sooty ?

Hi, no it dosent cough or slutter, the longest i,ve had it running was about 10 second then it just dies ,timing is correct .under the coil is a ballast resistor about 4 inches square ,it has three spades either side (one side marked distributor )outlet i think, the wires were pulled out by my mate and we are at a loss to the order they go back on .we have tried to work it out but dont want to damage the ignition circut. i cannot find any pictures or diagrams which show me the wiring of the coil ,/distributor. it seems the problem is the electric is cutting out as the engine runs.

This place will be good for you to search through. Probably find a diagram or a thread already there that'll help you.

PS- I don't recommend going on there and calling it an SD EYE

many thanks Grimm v8. going back over it its possible that we have put the camback on at a 180 degrees out . Have got to recheck it

problem solved ,in a rush to put engine in found we had put the cam in 180 degrees out, it sure pays to take your time to rebuld . No damage done. many thanks for replys.
