rover p4 100 mk4 brake issue.

assisting a widow whom hubby has passed on. need to sell car in a few months and checking it over note brake reservoir was near empty and foot brake went almost to floor pumping it made no difference and standing on it ..didn't sink to floor! checked under hood around servo.master brake etc and NO fluid leaks found. so checked each wheel inner area for 'wet' patch ..maybe a slave cylinder leak? but nothing found. too cold and windy/wet to start serious work such as stripping each wheel down and checking for leak(s) so putting repairs/strip etc off until probably march. anybody had such a missing fluid issue ? and where/how fixed? wonder if its an internal leak on servo ? and how does one check for that!

If the servo is leaking on the vacuum side , the fluid could all be in the brake vacuum reservoir under the RH front wing. My 80 had about pint in it.

To check for servo leak, pull the vacuum supply hose out of its grommet into the chamber, then feed something flexible down through the hole (small rubber hose, eg windscreen washer tubing), only enough to reach bottom. If it comes out wet....there is the problem. I have seen it get so bad that the engine started to suck fluid through the vacuum supply line, and pour loads of white smoke out the exhaust.

thanks will check that next week when I visit car. will also check under brake pedal ..in case fluid is leaking into car under carpet?

When I first got mine, if had to stop at a junction for more than a few seconds, the road behind me would disappear when I moved off, in a huge cloud of white smoke.

This was the level of brake fluid in the servo
