Rover Mudflaps

The very appealing Rover rear mudflaps with the embossed Rover motif, which has then been painted in white.

Were these mudflaps an optional extra for the Rover 2000 only? They don't appear in the Rover 3500 /3500S parts manual.... :?

I am aware that they have been reproduced to a very high standard in recent years, but what of the original ones from 1964?

They're in my parts manual - (Rover 3500 & 3500S part no. RTC9022B Sept 77)

The part numbers are Rear GAC628 and front GAC635

I wouldn't mind a set of those 8)

Hello Richard,

I was thinking that maybe the ones listed in the 3500 / 3500S parts manual may have been the plain ones, albeit the same shape.

Ron.

Hello Colin,

Thanks for the link. They certainly do look nice.

Were the front mud flaps ever fitted as standard? I have from memory only ever seen one P6 with the the front mud flaps fitted.

Ron.

The problem with the front mud flaps is they sit very close to the ground and get snagged but look very smart.

I actually think that dealers today still make a extra few quid on mud flaps and floor mats. "thank you for spending £10,000 on a car" "oh mudflaps and mats! yes that will be another £150+labour to fit" shocking really. In fact my mother got a new 306 in 1996 or there about and they wanted £80-£100 to fit a lamp in the boot!! Back in the p6 days mirrors were also and optional extra.

There is a set of flaps on ebay at present for £5, I have seen them go for over £100 in the past but think that is down to people going a tad OTT.

Colin

Hi all.
Rear flaps differ between models because of the later big bore exhaust on the 3500's.
They were listed as an extra in the options leaflet from the dealers along with fog lights, mats, headrests, radio, roofrack, even the webasto's etc.
They are now reproduced very well and at a reasonable price as well!well worth fitting in my opinion!
They were an addition to the later parts books.
The front ones are std for all P6's!
Front and rear flaps were an option not std.
Front flaps dont have the logo on them.
Fitting front flaps can cause a horrible grinding noise when you corner, especially with 2+ persons in the car,or loaded up for a holiday!and this has been the cause of many an owner thinking they have suspension, bearing problems!! if you get a grinding noise, look at the lower outer edge of the flap for the tell tale signs of rubbing!
Just take them off and test drive the car!! It could save you hours of stripping the suspension down trying to find the non existent fault!
Sure,if your front shocks and springs are a little tired,it could cause it as well.
Cheers Dave

The rover mudflaps look great if kept clean(ish) My problem with them is this. There too bl**dy expensive for what they are. ie: a small chunk of rubber. Those on ebay went for £70 plus postage! thats just for a pair, not even a full set! I'd love a set but not at those prices or anything like them.

My rear mudflaps are made of what looks like rubberised canvas or lino
I was hoping someone would make me a template so I could make some out of LandRover mudflaps or similar

DOH!!!
Silly me!!
I forgot there were 2 types of mudflap for the P6's! the solid rubber type with logo that ianp6man sells and the softer lumpy rubberised canvas type that dave mentions!!
Actually it is quite easy to make a set that look ok and do the job!
I got hold of a heavy duty rubber mudflap meant for a lorry, about 70cmx50cmx8mm thick from a local company called Steddals,," I dont know if they are nationwaide" for a few quid!!Then I made some templates out of cardboard till it was about right for fit, then cut them out of the lorry mudflap and bolted them on!
Eventually I managed to pick up some originals cheap, but I still have the ones I made up,just incase!!

Don't forget that you have to add vat to that Pilkie, oh and postage.

So £82.25 if you pick them up. And possibly over £90.00 if you have them sent.

HAGGLE!!!

Hmm I hadn't thought of that.

I will be needing quite a bit from there soon, so might just have to go along and buy it all at the same time 8)

Er £90 a set is still dear in my neck of the woods. I think i will do what Pilkie did with the lorry mudflaps.
(Cheers! Pilkie thats a good idea.) Maybe even stencil the Rover logo on them in white paint, like the originals ?

In the case of the genuine original mudflaps that featured the Rover motifs, these were imprinted into the rubber such that they were well below the surface of the mudflap. They also feature a raised border around the mudflap perimeter to add rigidity.

I do not know if the current remanufactured items, having not seen one up close, are consistant with the Rover originals. :?

The rubberised canvas type rear mudflaps were fitted as standard to cars as they left the factory. My '72 S still has them. They seem to disappear when the rear wheel arch starts to rot. I had another '72 S that I bought back in 1990. That still had both rear mudflaps when I bought it, but within a year they had both departed, probably at speed on the A12!

My standard "non motif" originals are still in place and secure. Perhaps I dont drive the old girl fast enough !
