Reverse????

So far the problems i've had have been small. Any ideas please.
3500 V8 Auto. 3 speed forward gears fine no slipping, kick down smooth along with all the gear changes.
Flat level ground. Engage reverse. Slowly creaps backwards. Then stoppped moving backwards. Pressed accelerator and engine revs rise but no backwards movement.
With no revs on the flat she will creep backwards but any revs doesn't make a great difference.
Any suggestions.
Transmission fluid full, probably over filled actually.
Drove 10 miles stopped. Went for a walk. 1 1/2 hours Drove 10 miles home, well to some shops around the corner, reversed into parking space and that's when i noticed she would go backwards. (Carpark on slight incline)

i get this now and then with Hermione,..when i go from D to R,the selector is locked in R but no drive, i've worked out that the quadrant on the gearbox end sometimes gets stuck between N and R,so i hold the button in and go slightly past R,release the button and bring it into R,...driver error in my case :D :D

If it creeps backwards it is engaging reverse so it's not a selector problem. If you get all forward gears including top it is a fault with the rear band or its operating mechanism. Try re-adjusting the rear band first.

I don't think it will be in the haynes manual, autos are a bit too much of a black art for them! It's obviously in the factory book though. If you haven't got one I can refresh my memory and post the setting.

I stand corrected, the band adjustment is in the haynes book. Just remember if you have a book that covers the 35 & 65 models that you refer to the correct type, and to do it you'll need a minature torque wrench.
Also be certain that you have no problems with top gear as if that has problems as well as reverse it won't be the band. Still worth checking the band adjustment though, if you reset it properly it can't do any harm.
Continuous use with a faulty rear band can damage the geartrain.

I got back into her a little later on and the box worked fine in reverse. 1 through 3 (forward) are also okay. Kickdown does what it says it should.
Seems strange but i'll have to see what's going on.

They can often work better when cold and gradually lose drive as they warm up. Either way it needs further investigation. There are other things that cause a loss of reverse but only in certain circumstances. If you are going to look at it you need a methodical approach through the basics, but really a road test by someone who knows what they're looking for is the best thing. Trouble is that tends to be the people who recon the gearboxes, so obviously they have a vested interest in trying to sell you a rebuild. Have you seen if the fluid is brown and/or burnt?
In my experience of the symptoms as described by you, the normal suspect as I said before is the rear band.

Hi All.
I had exactly this problem a few months ago with my BW65, I had previosly spent £450 having the box rebuilt, and it had only done 12000 mls in 3yrs when it went wrong!! I had a gut feeling I had been ripped off by the recon firm, but other than taking the box out again and stripping it to see what had been done,I had to trust it was ok. ???
I readjusted the rear band and all was well,,,till now!! its started slipping again, and it will not adjust any more! :( After speaking again to Harvey, the consensus is that the rear band has had it, and needs replacing, and I hope no other damage has been caused. I am going to put in my known good BW35,then strip the 65 myself to see if I can fix it by fitting a new rear band. I have found a retired auto specialist, who likes to tinker, and for a few pints of tea and plenty of bikkies, will pass on his wisdom to me :p he will probably end up doing it for me knowing him!!
I am putting the 35 in on sunday.
As its hissing down, ive decided to give the local car show a miss.My rover is my everyday car,so I need it to get to work!!
Watch this space, :p I will let you know what I find when Ive operated on the 65

Cleaned and prepped the 35 today, its all ready to go in. I took the 65 out, looked at how to set up the gear linkage, and it was obvious I could not make up a bracket to use the 65's cable as the exhaust will be in the way, as the 35's sump is bigger! So I have sorted out the rod change to work without the stabaliser bar. it took all day to do,9-5!! as it was raining, I am under my carport, but I had to keep stopping for the grand prix :p
Will complete the job tomorrow, and touchwood it will all go well, and it will work :D
Ps anybody close,ish to Bristol got a cheap,good rear d/side wing? ???

With hindsight pilkie i wouldn't have stopped for the grand prix. One of the most boring ones for a while. (And i've seen them all since 1990) Did anyone actually overtake anyone else?
I'm going to take Alexis out on Tuesday (weather permitting) to see if the reverse problem arises again.

I didn't see any overtaking, apart from Raikonen making 4 places at the start that was it. Compared to the way Schumacher sliced through the field last year it was pathetic. Nobody even looked close enough to make an attempt at a pass, looks like the aerodynamics made it impossible to stay close behind.
We've had a pretty good season so far, lets hope the rest aren't like this !

Wrong place to voice this so sorry.
My idea.
22 cars
22 race a year
each person to start in each position over the year.
1st 20 point
20th 1 point

over the year everybody starts in every place and therefore the more places they over take the more points they get.

Get rid of qualiying. Get rid of tracks you can't over take on. So yes. Goodbye to Monnaco, Monza and Hungary

why do you think i watch Moto GP,World and British Superbikes for :D :D, plenty of action, spills and thrills,..the only redeeming feature F1 has is young Lewis Hamilton, otherwise i'd rather watch paint dry.

YIPPIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The replacement box IS ok :p I was worried for a few secs, coz I could not get reverse! ??? once I had realised it was well jacked up at the front, and jacked the back up to level it,it also helps to top up the oil :D it all works! just got to adjust the kickdown cable, but that can wait.
I found some dry rot on the nsr floor near the jacking point, the jacking point tube is mint!,so just a small 6"x4" floor plate needed.
Its mot is at 9am weds,so got to get that done PDQ!!!
mot out,tax out, ins out.all on june 1st ??? I usually stagger it to save the impact on the pocket! at least the tax is free.and the gearbox cost me nowt!! phew!!
I'm gonna have a cold one or 2 and a long hot soak in the bath now

Hi Dave,

Yes,its a bit fiddly, but ive done it before, take your time..I took the old one out,by putting the car front on highish ramps, lowered the box and torque converter out as one unit on my big trolley jack to stop oil spills, the new one went in easy, you have only to locate the centre of the converter into the flywheel,as its already fully engaged into the box, pt the 2 longest lower bellhousing bolts in a bit then just wiggle, jack it up a tad,,and tighten bolts till it locates then do up the 4 flywheel to torque bolts, keep the weight on the jack, dont let it hang down!!its a damned sight easier than trying to align the box into the torque converter,as the weight will get to you even with a jack!! a competent well tooled up home mechanic should be able to do a swap in a day easy, with tea and bikkie breaks! :p

If i understood right you did it without removing the engine as suggested by the manual. Or is it a requirement just for the 4 cylinder cars?

I think you can remove the gearbox on any model without removing the engine, it's just considered easier to remove the whole lot together, but that depends on what equipment you have available. The problem with removing the gearbox only is that they are quite heavy and dificult to hold in position whilst you bolt them back up, a lot easier with an extra pair of hands...

just before I went on hols to NZ I fitted a new gbox and clutch into drew "kiltyarse's" series 1 2000tc without removing the engine. It is relatively easy,as long as you are fairly competent, have a really good big trolley jack and highish wheel ramps, and a decent set of tools, and,an extra pair of hands always helps :D get them doing the little fiddly jobs :p
If anyone is unsure about doing it,and wants a bit more technical info on the complete proceedure send me a PM. :D
always glad to help
dave
