Respraying a P6. Colour choices?

I have been discussing a lot lately with my friend who is assisting me with the restoration of my P6 V8 as to what we should do in the way paint finish.

I have decided that I am going to install a Red interior for certain and I would definately like a boot mounted spare. So, im just throwing some ideas around atm for the paint finish...

Option 1)

Body:pearlescent Red paintwork
Roof + D posts: painted in pearlescent black. retain existing tilt 'n slide sunroof.
Spare wheel cover: black vynal
Sills: pearescent black.
Wheels: SD1 VDP. Pollished rims with anthracite centres. Centre badge to have the rover shield painted in correct colours.
Interior: Red ambla/leather.

Option 2:

Body: Gloss black with 5 or 6 layers of clearcoat for deep finish
Roof + D posts: Get new solid roof to replace original roof with sunroof. Cover new roof and D posts in blood red vynal.
Spare wheel cover: red vynal
Sills: gloss black same as body.
Wheels: SD1 VDP. Pollished rims with anthracite centres. Centre badge to have the rover shield painted in correct colours.
Interior: Red ambla/leather.

What ever I do, it has to be better than almond!

*edit* I think de-badging the car could look good?
Perhapse just leave the V8 badge on the front grille and the silver rover badges on the D posts?

IanP6man's NADA copy that he built looked great in Rover nightfire red, which is almost pearlescent, although I believe it is a micametallic.

Me personally, I'd go for the gloss black all over. Not too sure about the blood red vinyl roof though! But then again, if it's a P6 hearse, you could provide a gothic limo service :;):

Personalising your classic is great. It makes them stand out more in a line of standard cars. I think that the one thing you have to bear in mind is that if you should want to sell the car, most people want the best standard example they can afford. Gloss black all over looks really good on a P6, and shouldn't detract too much from the vehicles value. But if you are not ever going to sell it, go for it!! :D

Not worried about the next owner... I have promised to sell the car to Martin (my friend assisting me with the rebuild) once myself and Monica (I hope my future wife) have finished with it.
Apparently it will make a good family car! hehe!:p

Matt Black is (eventually) to be the colour of choice on our 2000TC. Possibly Satin. It's de-badged except for the outlines in the paint at the moment.
I have mentioned this before but I'm just keeping the idea alive. :D

My convertible was fully de-badged except for the TC badge on the grill, which I stripped and sprayed body colour, along with the TC badge on the speaker grille and the Stereo !

I also removed all the door handles, boot lock, and moved the rear number plate under the bumper.

One of my mates is spraying his car matt black, with a gloss black stripe up the bonnet and over the roof. :)

Have to say I like the sound of option 2; if your going to upset the traditionalists you might as well go for it!

I'd do the sills in blood red as well thought - in body colour there's a tendency for the bodyside to look too tall - contrsdting sills make the car look longer and meaner.

One other idea - what about doing the stainless trim of the roof gutters, screen pillars and door frames in matt black? When I used to paint cars it was very difficult to make paint stick to stainless; have things moved on now?

Chris

You need to use a self etch primer for stainless and alluminium, thats what I used when spraying the chrome on mine. Forgot to mention, I did front & rear bumpers, plus all light clusters, rubbed down, etch primed and sprayed metalic silver, went really well with the turquoise paint.

Spraying? I'll probably hand paint mine. :D You don't seem to get brush marks with Matt black. I don't think I like the Gloss Black stripe idea though. Horses for courses.

Matt black with a gloss black stripe?

Sounds familiar to me! It would be great to see a P6 done like this........Any takers? :laugh:Well ok, this is gloss black with a matt black stripe. I propose stealing the T4 from Gaydon, and giving it a make over!!

Hmm....

Seems paint choice may be academic now... Ive taken all the pannels off and the base unit is pretty knackered.
The sills are just so badly bodged. :(
What was going to be a £500 spruce up looks like its rapidly turning into £2k worth of work.

I feel like ive just lost a bollock.

Unfortunately you've hit a common P6 problem, its very easy to hide extensive rot.
On the plus side, if you can weld yourself then its not too difficult to repair unless its REALLY bad, and the repair don't have to be invisible as they won't be seen (as you know !)
