recovering the rear 1/4 panels

hi there,
I have been busy installing new furlex to the door openings and suffered many problems reagrding the size and inability to fit the size of the lips, but more to that later.
I have removed the outside rear 1/4 panel , because it showed bubbles which are rust under the surface of the covering.
When I removed the covering , it was a paper thin black stuff, the thinnest type of vinyl ever? so the question is the following: if it is recovered with standard vinyl , which is thicker, will it still fit back in its original place on the car? I ask this because someone must have been down this path before....
I removed the little boat signs on the outside of the panel and have discovered that they are made of plasichrome plastic, and I thought that they were Rover quality aluminum, now to find a replacement , one is rusty, is that possible with plastichrome?
BTW, a guy in australia invented plastichrome and sold the rights to it for $ 6000- to a car company in the USA, that used to make holdens..........sigh...such is life............

Your question as to whether they fit with thicker vinyl reminds me of what I did to mine.
I fitted GRP wings and the 1/4 panel was tight on the wing, I did not want any rubbing so stripped the vinyl and slit the corners of the panel at the bottom up around 3mm then with a hammer and dolly folded the bottom edge up a little higher, this gave good clearance, you could do this and re cover if your vinyl was thicker.
