Rear cliper ( caliper even ! ) leak

Don't forget the paper Stina, It really prevents moisture!

Hi John , yeah you can see from the pic why i'm so worried about getting it right , that piece of paper's done a sterling job in there eh !!!????

O.k guys . This is where we are . Car is back on the road . Rigged the suspect caliper up to the brake system and bleed it through . Had other half hold the peddle under pressure for 5 mins or so ( with the cover off ) . No leakage . So , refitted calipers , adjusted as per Harvey / Rons instructions . i.e disk in and out until just free enough to turn , without binding . Then bleed through fronts until clear fluid . Fitted new brake light switch as was only working with emergency type forces . I have a really strong foot peddle but i'm not convinced about the hand brake . Seemed to get better on the test run , and will hold on our drive . ( 20 ish degrees ) also will pull the motor right down if pulled right up . Just not liking the way it'll come up about 8 clicks if you really pull on it . One for Harvey maybe , the quaderents are operating from stop to stop , so what's a'miss if anything ? thought it was better than it is now before i started this project , maybe i'm being over critical :? Is their any adjustment on the cable ? Could find no reference in any of my bibles :? Yes the adjusters are working , could hear them strutting their stuff ,
Any thoughts ?
Ps pulled muscles i never knew existed . :D
Did manage to wash and chamois ( cant spell that ) her down , so she's good for the shopping run tomorrow :D

Glad it is all back together again Stina.... :) Did your willing assistant torque up the half shaft bolts for you or did you do that yourself? I ask as when I do mine, I have to brace myself against the wheel etc else I slide along the floor as 85lbs/ft is pretty tight!

Ron.

P.S : Chamois is spelt correctly. I have seen it spelt chammy in a cycling magazine once...

Hi Ron . No i did them up the old man sat in the car stabbing the brake peddle as i got another bite on the socket . My neck muscles and knuckles know how 85 ld/ft feels like now , was willing the wrench to crack off .
ps don't think they were torqued up that tight when i removed them

Well done that lass! Definitely a cause celebre for a nice long soak in the bath with a glass of wine!

The adjustment will come up with frequent use of the hand brake. Or you could climb underneath a final time and simply yank on the handbrake cables......

Chris

Cheers Chris . Did wonder that as it seemed to get better after a short run . maybe need to practice my sweeny hand brake turns in the tesco car park . Oh no just remembered i'm 45 now , too old :D

If the quadrants are back on their stops at rest, and there's no free play in the cable then that side of it is OK, but with the handbrake lever coming up that far and the quadrants going almost full travel then it's not been adjusted up far enough. It will improve with use if the calipers are working as they should, but only because it's so far out in the first place, and it won't ever get to be as good as doing it manually. All you can do is wait to see what happens with use, and then if you're happy with it that's a decision for you.

Hi Harvey , i did do it your way sliding the disk in and out Honest ! I'm happy with the foot brake and the new fluid bleed through , also o.k with the hand brake . Just hope the mot man is in February :? Got time before then to have another look i guess . Can the cable stretch , Can it be adjusted ? It dose hold the car in drive with a tweak of power !

All cables can stretch over time. There is an adjuster on the underside of the transmission tunnel above the prop, just forward of the diff pinion crossmember.

It's always possible with the P6 system to pull the handbrake further than where it's working at it's best. They don't tend to go solid like other set ups :)

Hi guys , thanks for that , i'll have a look before the mot , got a couple of months . Took it on the shopping run this afternoon and it seems better than yesterday so maybe adjusting up with use . That's the good news , the bad news is that i feel like i've been run over by a train , laying under the car most of the weekend , lifting , stretching ,and torquing up drive shafts etc has pulled muscles i never knew i had . And i thought i was reasonably fit . Must be better things to do laying on your back :D

actually stina , there is nothing at all better to do on your back!
i have it in writing so you'd best come do my handbrake!
HONEST!

When my car was rear ended I spent an evening working on the rear brakes the day before the insurance medical to make sure I was stiff and aching for the examination !

Hi all .
An update of an old thread . Re sealed the calipers about 2 years ago ( or at the date buried in this thread somewhere ) All o.k and held out well , and went through a couple of mot's with no problems , good readings . However , i knew it was only ever a temporary fix , and i'd revisit it when i had the cash .
So since the mot in feb , i'd noticed the fluid level dropping at a steady rate in the reservoir . I put a piece of cardboard under the rear axle to see if the fluid was coming from the calipers , it was !
So ordered recon , stainless sleeved calipers from Mark Grey , new flexie pipes , caliper to caliper , body to caliper , and the short copper pipe on the caliper , new pads too . Borrowed a jack from me old mate Jules , It must be the Mother of every jack ever made , An old dunlop thing , i reckon 3cwt !
My hired ( read unpaid Dad ) turned up at 9 am , and we had them swapped over , adjusted up and road tested by 2.30pm . Chuffed :D

That will make allow you to sleep better at night Stina knowing that they won't start leaking anytime soon. You should in theory get at least 10 years out of them before they need a new seal kit. By then the flexible hoses will likely need replacing anyway.

Don't suppose you took some photos of the procedure along with the replacements to post up?

Ron.
