Power Steering

Can anyone advise please.
I have a Rover 3500 auto 1971 J reg which I have owned since May 1975! Just recently I have discovered a leak in the power steering box (from the underside of the box) I imagine the seals are probably the problem (I suppose it's to be expected being as the car is nearly 40 years old and this is the first such leak) My question is:- how difficult is it to change the steering box, I do have a spare although this has been sat in the garage for 30 years plus, so perhaps the seals in this may have dried out (all the ports are sealed), do I need any special tools? or, as an alternative, would anyone recommend one of these "miracle" cures ? e.g. Wynns treatment or STP etc. The repairs I have carried out myself in the past are such as renewed all wheel bearings, all UJ's, prop shaft, shocks, de-dion tube, rear suspension (just to give an idea of my experience) however, I have never done any work on the steering apart from setting the "toe in".

I have used the Wynns treatment in PAS systems without any ill effects, and it will act as a seal softener so could possibly reduce or even stop a leak if you were lucky. If your replacement box has been sealed up then with luck that should be OK, I've had complete connected systems laying around for years and used them without problems. If the seals on that one have dried out you could always add some Wynns......

No special tools required to remove and refit the box.

Hi Harvey,
Many thanks for your quick reply, I have picked up a tin of "Wynns" treatment, I think I'll wait until the weather gets a bit warmer, don't use my beloved Rover in this weather, it's definately brass monkey weather at the moment, did I mention I have owned my 3500 for nearly 36 years, I'm going for the record

Just use half a tin for PAS systems. If you wanted to add it now just warm it up as you warm the car up, then add it and allow it to run and mix into the fluid.
36 years and not bored with it yet, must be a good sign. I was working on them 36 years ago.

Hello again Harvey,
Thanks for that extra information, I was wondering how much to add to the reservoir, I've just had another thought, having read the "workshop manuel" it states that to remove the steering box you first need to remove the brake fluid reservoir, is this necessary ?
Thanks
Best Regards

I stripped mine and replaced the seals. It is possible if you are half decent at weilding a spanner and like a challenge!

Hi Dave, nice to see you again

Sparky has the power steering box back in if you want to pop over and have a look?

There is nothing around it so you can get a good idea of what needs to be removed for the work.

No need to remove the brake reservoir, just unbolt it from the bracket and lay it out of the way.

Hi Keynsham,
Thanks for the very detailed photos, I am used to engineering but that looks a bit like hydraulic engineering to me and I'm not sure whether I could manage that, I'm hoping the tin of Wynns will do the trick

Hi Richard,
It is certainly great to come and have a chat about our Rovers. The photos are excellent, I think I can see where I am going from there should the need arise but I will keep in touch. Many Thanks
Dave

Richard, thanks for that photo of the PAS box and the clutch master cyclinder set-up. That is the best, clearest picture I've seen yet of how that lot fits together, very useful for future reference when(if?) I get around to converting my car from automatic to manual - don't suppose you could take the same photo again but this time get it in focus!?
