Poll - Best colour for a P6?

Aleph

Thursday I'm going to have a look at a P6, 1976 model. What is clear allready, is that the car needs a complete respray. The car looks honest. having had only four owners from new. Now there is (in my eyes) one problem: the colour is avocado. I fear that keeping it that colour will have a bad influence on my social life. At the other hand, this colour clearly shows it's one of the last ones built, so it might be worth keeping it original.

My question: what do you consider the best and the worst colour for a 3500 P6?
And what would you do: respraying it in ANY colour you like, an ORIGINAL P6 (or P5) colour or it's OWN ORIGINAL colour?

To help you, I refer to the page of Ruediger: http://www.ruediger-wicke.de/SerienLackierung.htm.

Thank you for participating :).

Hi Aleph,

Colour is such a subjective thing: the question surely is what colour do you want your car to be? How much do you value originality versus your choice?

I love Wedgewood and City Grey on early cars and have a regard for Scarab and Corsica on S2's...but I must like reds too!

OCY in the garage was originally Tobacco Leaf, and I might have kept it at that but for some previous owner who'd had her (very badly) sprayed a shade I came to call Caramac.

If the car you're seeing on Thursday is straight mechanically and structurally yet does need a respray....it's your call. Good bargaining point too! :)

Personally, i'd love to have an Avocado car, its quite rare and I think it looks fantastic! It does depend on what you want the car to be and your own personality. Also the colour of the interior could play an important role in your desicion. Keeping it within the original range of colours, I think White, Richelieu, Paprika or Platinum would look great. My least favourites are Almond, Mexico and Cameron, Mostly because they are so common but I am warming to Tobacco leaf as I get older (but only with Huntsman roof. And Sundym glass. And Rostyles)
Series 1 colours are another story but I probably wouldn't use them on a series 2.
Key point though: What is the interior?

My vote, Keep it Avocado.

The late P6 colours are crucially afected by the trim to the roof and 1/4 panels. Avacado, Brasilia, Paprika and Pendelican White are made or broken by the shade of Huntsman that goes with them. Avocado with the reddish Huntsman would look fine. How about a Mango interior for real period Chic?

My personal favourite P6 colour is late S1 April Yellow. But I don't think that would work on an S2. So how about Arden Green with light Huntsman roof and 1/4's as I did for the Thai car? :

But for my ultimate favourite late P6 colour scheme it has to be VIP Platinum with the very red version of Huntsman!

I kinda like the kookier colours that just arent used now. I think P6s and triumph 2000s look great in any shade of brown.... ( i'm probably in a minority but that's fine :))

Love the vinyl roofs and like them to have period customizations.

Mine's Burnt grey which is a 60s colour. I like it, but i do love some of the other subtle 60s colours too. THere's a pale yellow and green which i really like, and i do love lunar grey too.

Rich.

I am thinking of a P5B in Burn't orange  may not be origional but I know if I pursue it that it will invite a lot of comment (probably bad)

Yes but Lunar Grey is decent and quite beautiful, Avocado is ... erm .. let's call it "controversial" for the time being...

Working in marketing, it's more accepted than in other industries. And at least, the motor will be recognized by my client's receptionists, which makes parking a lot easier. It might even earn back some money this way :) ..

It's part of that car's personality. If it's survived this long in avocado it'd be wrong to take it's colour away from it surely?

exactly ...

And IF I buy it, I would be inclined to keep it in thi colour. Buy she would be go by the name of poisonous frog as of then :)

Or the frog princess... ;-) I just love the fact that it's that colour because at some point it was fashionable. A real statement from when it was made. I wouldnt change the colour of mine even though it's not my favourite.

I'd keep it the original colour. I like the Brazilia (turd brown) on mine. Like avocado, It's so fantastically 70s and really suits the car. I'll be sticking with the original colour when I get the paint work sorted.

It's also cheaper to respray in the original colour, as you don't have to do all the door shuts etc if the paint is in good condition.

I wish the previous owner of my TC thought like most of you in here. Instead, he seemed to change his mind about the colour of the Rover all too often.
The problem is that he was really determined to turn his wishes into reality.
Briefly, the car left the factory in Arden green. Then he turned it into brown, something like Brasilia (it must have been the '70s fashion height!). The next step was brownish again, but this time metallic with a sort of golden hue in it. That must have been '70s turning into '80s then! However, i guess it would look horrible in a series 1 car. :?
After that, he probably came into his senses and painted the car white. Just a plain whitewash white. The last stage was white again, but a better one, very close to Pendelican white.
Unfortunately, the quality of the paint jobs changed gradually from decent (the oldest) to absolutely rubbish (the last one).

Since i got it, i was thinking of: a) Returning the car into its original Arden green, b) Paint it Brigade red (Just because i like it) c) Keep it Pendelican white with a decent paint job.

As it is usually the case, time, money and space ruled out the first two, so i am trying (slowly...) by repairing and painting one panel at a time in Pendelican white. And it's not too bad either, as i actually like the colour, keeps the car cool in the summer, and i think that dark colours do not look very nice in our bright sunshine.

Mine is currently Lunar Grey which I think gives it a classy look.

I am considering changing it (as it is all in bits now - completely in bits) to Monza red which makes it just that little bit more purposeful.

Both would be with the black vinyl roof.

What I like about the darker colours including Monza, is that it brings out the timelessness /modernity of the design very well. The more iconic 70ies colours (e.g. avocado, tobacco leaf and that nasty orange) date the car immediately into the seventies. Monza indeed is purposeful and gives the car what the Germans call "Ueberhohlprestige" (when people leave the fast lane quicker to make room for you) :D . In Germany the hierarchie is (supercars) - Mercedes - BMW - Audi - VW - (anything else).

Nicely put Aleph! I agree that a colour doesn't need to be "in yer face" on a P6. But the car does respond to contrasting colour for the sill cover and roof / 1/4 panels. The objective being to make them dissappear rather than to highlight them. That's why I liked my Arden Green with light Hunstman / Beige highlights - made the car look long and sleek.

UPDATE.

First i'd like to thank you all for your involvement and interesting reactions, which have helped me a lot in deciding that if I buy her, she will be kept in the original colour (in real life, it doesn't look bad. Let's say it's an acquired taste).

I went to see her yesterday. Cosmetically, she's in quite a sorry state. I didn't find anything really worrying, but after consulting my "expert" it turned out that I need to have a look at the jack supports before deciding. I'm going to have another look this Sunday.

The good thing is I can probably pick her up for € 600,=, so if the jack supports are ok, I'll take the gamble. Also, she doesn't seem to have been tampered with, which is both rare and positive.

I'll keep you updated. I've got pictures in my phone but I can't publish them now as the phone isn't willing to communicate with my MacBook for some reason.
