Hi all.

Now the VW Karmann Ghia has finally sold and gone and its prized number plate put onto my P6V8 :D, I can now think about giving the P6's some well earnt and overdue tlc.

1st to get some was Connor the 2000sc auto, who after his 17 yr sleep has been giving sterling service as my daily driver since I bought him!!
He has had a water leak and an oil leak for a while and today I finally found the water leak!
It was a pinhole dribble on the square plate on the back of the head, but luckily I had a spare sc head obtained from the rover P6 club display at Stoneleigh last year. :)
Bit fiddly to get to but all now sorted.
The oil leak turned out to be a seeping autobox sump gasket, this I had renewed when I got him,so ive nipped up the bolts hoping this cures it,if not I will pop it off and add some sealant or get another gasket and redo it.
Another small oil leak is coming from the rear crankshaft seal,as its coming out of the gearbox bell housing grilles!!
Ive checked around the headgasket and cannot detect any leaks there!!
Does anyone know if this seal can be replaced by removing the gearbox and sump,or is it a crank out job?? "Harvey??".

2nd.
The V8 developed a nasty squeak on the steering when I went to collect the VW in Oct,this turned out to be the new top o/s ball joint I had fitted for last years MOT,that amazingly was knackered,so I popped one off a spare upright I had, fitted it and now I have a very silent squeak!
The choke on the HIF6's has been giving problems, well the n/s carb anyway,I fitted a new 'O' ring hoping to cure it,but it still has a mind of its own! :(
I will eventually fit the early set of carbs and manifold back on.

I am going to give Connor a rest and start using the V8 again for a week or 2 to make sure its all working ok before starting on the re paint, seats and roof refurb.

So if anyone has a spare set of HIF6 carbies or just a n/s carb going spare,,PM me.

Thats all for now. Time for bed!

It's a lipseal, so with the gearbox out and the sump off, (and possibly the engine backplate) you can slacken the rear main cap and see if the seal will go in easily, if not slacken all the mains to allow the crank to drop a touch to get the seal over the back of it. You have to be careful not to damage the lip of the seal when pushing it over the crank. There is a special tapered sleeve to do this, but it can be done without.Might be worth a look at the ends and mains if you do get this far.
It's fairly unusual for 4 pot rear mains to leak, so check the breathers are clear, and be sure that it's not ATF from the front pump seal before you get too involved.

Don't use any sealants on the gearbox sump gasket.

Cheers Harvey.

I had a feeling it wouldnt be straight forward, its defo eng oil as it has the brown tint, unlike the atf red tint.
I cant find any other reson for the leak, but will keep looking.
Theres not a hint of a rumble on the engine,so as its only a miniscule amount now ive hopefully sorted the g/box seal,I will leave it be for now!

Well used ATF has a brown tint, used engine oil is normally black.

I first thought that, but it was only about 3 months ago I renewed the gasket and put new oil in the g/box. :)
The atf on the g/box dipstick and seeping from the sump gasket is red!
Brown oil is same as oil on eng dipstick! :)

FINALLY!!
Connor gets some donated shiney nuts to go with his 'S' trims.

I bought some dogs danglies gorilla chrome lug nuts from the USA for the V8's rostyles, they are as close to original spec as I could find, triple plated and a very good price as well, only $25 inc shipping.
Was so pleased with them I bought another set.
Less than a cheapie set in the uk!!
Only time and the weather will tell if they last longer!

So ive used the best shiney nuts of the V8's 2 old sets to fit to connor,so now the 'S' trims look like they should!
Also gave them a new set of badges! "Hope sticks like shit works ok!!!"
Just got to repaint the black on the trims and wheel rims this weekend!!

Connor is now back on daily driver duty as the V8 is having a mini resto,"see other post",
