Start by removing and earthing the green cable at the fuel sender unit under the tank and grounding it to see if the guage reads full (with ignition on). If it does move when grounded the sender unit is at fault. If there is no movement the problem is most likely with the guage or it's voltage regulator. If the temperature guage is also not working the problem is most likely the voltage regulator as it provides a common supply. This is a rectangular metal unit (looks like a large relay) mounted on the rear of the instrument panel.

Yes, you can remove the sump with the engine in the car. Just undo all of the bolts and wiggle it out.

Firstly though, check all of the breather pipes are clear as they can cause crankcase pressure and make it leak, and check the sump bolts are tight. Not too tight, just nicely snugged up.

Sump can be removed while the engine is still in the car. Autos need the exhaust front pipes removing, manuals don't. Sounds like you're chasing the leaks around because the breathers are blocked.
Did someone just say that......

Test the fuel guage by earthing the supply to the sender with the ignition on to see if the guage goes to full, if it does the tank unit is faulty, if not it's the guage. Then if the guage goes to full when the supply the earthed then join the supply to the sender, to the earth on the sender, and if it stays on full the earth is OK, if it doesn't the tank unit earth is faulty.

ermm.... yes I think so 8)

I had a V8 once, which got so badly blocked that it would regularly blow the dip stick out

I did an SD1 V8 that blew out a gallon of oil in 85 miles, and I cured that just by cleaning out the system and replacing all the breathers. The owner insisted it needed a rear main seal replacing because another garage told him so. I gave him the choice of having the rear main seal replaced at the original garage, or having the oil leak cured.......
