Only one speaker ?

Guten Abend alle zusammen !

I still love it here in the forum, and I am SO happy that so many good people are ready to share their knowledge, views and ideas here - and, on some occasion, even more... .
So, as I could not dream of a better place to ask yet another question that shows how little I know and how slow progress is here with our mate from Great Britain :D - here goes:

After much ado we settled for a new "old look" radio for Jimmy. I will not post any pics, as it is not a VERY stylish item  - but is not too expensive (around 100 pounds) and provides more than a "real" old radio that would cost around 60 or so.

I have removed the speaker grille and have found what most of you will know - an old 6.5 inch speaker (by Radiomobile :D ).
I am sure that good sound quality can only be found in rear speakers and maybe door installments, I read quite a bit of that in the forum. But I am not prepared to do so much work right now, and we also like the very toned down, quiet, "old school"/"old man" look on Jimmy .

So the question arises:
What to fit into the hole of the old speaker for maximum effect ? The new radio will have four 45 Watt "outs".
I read somewhere about two speakers that would go in there - is that correct ?
Please name ANY idea that comes to mind.

DANKESCHÖN !!

Heike and stefan

(Oh yes:
As I had removed the glove compartments, I collected Heike from the station. It took her about ten minutes AND MY ASKING to realize that what was in front of her did look different  :!:

AND:
I went to the monthly meeting of the IG-Speichenrad after that, on Thursday. Takes a 15 minute drive through the city, not a pleasant route - BUT I CAME TO LOVE JIMMY EVEN MORE ! That happens every time we drive him or work on him or plan something around him.
I could not think of another car that I would like more... )

So glad to hear your love affair is still progressing with jimmy :D. Have you checked to se wether jimmy as a speaker under the rear parcel shelf too? if not there may still be the wires to connect a speaker, for a tempery solution I would fit a new speaker in both the front and rear positions. I would take the old speakers with me to match size and fixing holes for ease of instalation. Good luck with it and keep on loving

First:

DANKESCHÖN, guys !

I thought I had thought of every setup, but using "excess" space in dash and compartements ... gives me something to really take into consideration, I must admit, Regz !

I must admit the following:
At one time when still in England, I switched on the radio. I thought I heard white noise from the grille AND the rear.

There is even a potentiometer (?) to balance the volume fore and aft, I think - I remembered my fathers pride when he had fitted said device in his Kadett C in the 70s - and a switch at the side of the console.
As the radio is dead, there was nothing more to find out.

As there is NO sign of a speaker in the rear - a hole, a grille, the little holes in speaker-shape - I could not imagine there to be one.
So, I asked Heike yesterday when posting, and as we were both unsure, I left that bit out. I´ll check out switches and other stuff today, I think (can I see a speaker from under the boot ?) and will tell.
But I THINK the wiring is there.
As I want to keep the instalment going, then refine it, I thought I settle with just the front speaker for now... .

By the way, cars in English are treated female

Right - that leaves me with a problem, then :) : From moment one, Chris called Jimmy Jimmy - and it stuck so well that we never considered a sex change  :!:
We will need help to sort this one out, guys :? :!: :!: :!:

Gotta go, bye for now

Sparky is definitely a 'he'

... pew - one thing solved : There is at least a fraction of the P6s is male - do future events have to sport parking space for "him" and "her" :?: :?: :?:

I checked on Jimmy.
He does have the wiring AND speaker under the parcel shelve !!
So, it will be two speakers - YESSSSS :D !!!

I have an original radiomobile and did have 1 speaker in the front behind the grille under the radio and one in the rear parcel shelf. I replaced both speakers with new of the same size. Sound is improved quite a bit but still can't play loud as sound is distorted, but loud music in my P6 would not be cricket so not a problem. I think any V8 IS a HE.

Exactly what I think I will do.
As a new radio might put out more power etc., we might have less distortion - but I agree: loud music is neither neccessary nor a benefit when having the engine to listen to ... .

Ha Ha . I've got a bite Mick :D I love the sound of my old girl . I'm going out to fire her up and Have a rumble around in her . And i'm not going to read your reply Ha

I was told along time ago, never argue with a female as you cant win, so your safe. Anyway your an honourary geezer, the way you wield a spanner. Therefore your V8 is honoured as well, The ONLY female V8.

If I were to stick with single speakers front and rear, I would crosswire them. Ie. Left Front + and Right Front - on the front speaker and same Rear for the rear. That way you get "full" mono and not just one channel, and you have a working Fader function in the radio (as well as the button/capacitor(?) already fitted, which is excellent!).

Male/female - cars have attitude if not personality. My old S1 was a girl and had a name, my current is a guy (part dandy, part gangster), definitely.

Well, I think I will not respond to any more of this in future - this is getting REAL strange    :!: :!:

As we all know Rover didnt want us improving on perfection when it came to these cars and left us very little choice as to where to put extra speakers so that we could listen to the Archers LOUD!!!
So this is what I have done
003-32.jpg

2 x 4" Kenwood speakers either side of the console (plenty of clearance for the glovebox)
A rather large Sony speaker behind the grille
A 6x9 under the rear shelf
And these rather nice NOS Nippon shelf speakers sourced from a local car boot sale for ...............£6 :D
004-39.jpg

So thats six speakers running through a nice JVC head unit (original one safely stored away)
And all in all a great sound :D  :p
