Nooo...that colour's got to go!

Wish I knew exactly what colour my car is painted, got some mixed a few years ago that was a pretty good match but the name escapes me now. Almost sure it was triumph carmine red?

Harvey,
one of the possible matches at the time was an SD1 colour I'm sure. The bumper is early SD1, and it has SD1 alloys so someone raided the scrap yard some time in the late eighties or early ninties I think. I like the colour though, and have gotten so used to the bumper now that I don't want to replace it! Though I must change the damaged number plate plenth, and get a second over rider for the rear. The car started in almond, then cammeran green, then this red, according to the tax book and info from previous owners.
Regards,
Dave

Hello Stan. I wonder if it is possible to get a metallic paint mixed with the correct period Tobacco Leaf colour, but of course with added depth and sparkle? Doesn't necessarily have to be Tobacco Leaf, you could could presumably get any seventies colour 'updated' as a modern metallic paint. Just a thought.
Scarab blue looks better with a black interior, and whilst Saffron is an eye-popping colour it wasn't available in Europe. If you don't care about being a stickler for originality I would look at the contemporary colours from Audi. They have recently offered some really nice variations on the colours Rover offered forty years ago. They had a lovely rich wine red offered on the TT in 2008, and a few really nice shades of blue. The metallic blue on the current RS6 is a modern twist on Scarab, but again would look better with a black interior.
My current hot favourite for my own project is BMW Monaco Blue metallic. Looks crap in most of the photos I've turned up on the internet, but great in bright sunlight.
I expect my four wings back from the panelbeater next week, after having had them gently bead-blasted, new metal let in to replace the corroded areas, a lurid lime green anti-corrosive base coat and finished in high build primer. Hopefully I woun't have too much sanding to do. Just need to find the money for my respray now...
My friends at ClassX Automobile here in Berlin have just refinished a Daimler in Regency red:

. Monza is a better red though, always look good if well maintained.

Wow Dave, that looks a really good colour. And I also really like the SD1 bumper. I never thought i'd say that about a replacement bumper on a P6! I'd prefer it without the no plate plinth though, but I guess the rubber trim doesn't go all the way accross?

Thanks Al, some good thoughts there...that Daimler does look good! Think I'd sooner keep a solid colour though.

==========================

Had a couple of samples mixed today in 2-pack - Richelieu and Scarab. Not showing up too well on the photo because of the light and flash though....

I'm really quite taken with the Richelieu...red but not in-your-face red.

Dave...love that colour by the way!

Its a hard decison. But look at it this way, if you spend good money on a paint job, whatever you choose, it will look bright ... especially in 2K.

Lads,
Thanks for the positive comments! Thought it was just me that liked it! Very hard to photograph though! Must get her out in full sunlight over the weekend and get a proper shot. I took it to a long established paint factors a number of years ago and with the owners help narrowed it down to 3 BL colours, had one mixed, must find the list and the paint sample over the weekend. I've got a good front valance on the way, and need to at the very least spray over the grey primer where the surface rust had started. When I bought her I sanded and sprayed these areas to prevent rot. Have to say I think the SD1 bumper gives the car a more agressive stance (and probably helps cooling!). It annoyed the purists in the begining but they've now warmed to the car, helped by the fact that I have two standard 3500Ss. In answer to your question Chris the rubber trims stop at the plenth on each side IIRC. Will let you know once I find the paint name.
Regards,
Dave

But, P6s were never painted Jag regency red .... a colour change out of the Rover range will crab it ... its better left alone.
I know what you mean but I think it is perfectly acceptable to think of something under the BL umbrella colour wise...! Jaguar & Daimler Vanden Plas models came in some glorious metallic shades that would look wonderful on a P6... Even Allegro's and Landcrab's came in some exciting, eye-popping, 1970's metallics...!!!

Fair point. NZ built P6s used several non-Rover colours. As they were built in the same plant as BMC, Triumph and Jag, they often came out with Triumph or Jag colours. No metallics that I've seen though. I'd be inclined to at least keep the colour 'in period'.

Richelieu was also used on early SD1 models.

Colin

The Richelieu I had mixed gives the Paint Code (BLVC number according to Ruediger's listing) as 211 and the Production Years as 1975 - 1980, the Scarab code being JCA and the years 1972 - 1975.

Think I'm going with the Richelieu by the way! :)

I believe a Richelieu coloured 'pre-production' SD1 was sold by Country Classics (BL specialists) a year or so ago... It was an exceptionally early N-registered car so the 1975-1980 usage period seems correct... Good luck with your colour chage, please do keep us posted...

hi,
there was one genuine metallic on a p6 and that was the last 44 off the production line, all were VIP's, huntsman roof, air-con, boot mount and a brown leather coloured steering wheel, sdi fabric seats and headlining in brown. the name of the colour has escaped me, it is too late no too early, going to bed, this will bug me now as i can't remember the colour.

Was it it Platinum?

(Photo credit to Ruediger by the way!)

have seen factory painted platinum vip's and they did nothing for me at all, they just look like a badly thought out aftermarket spray job!
Colour is a strange beast, what looks good in a photo can look like crap in reality and what looks good on one body style can look awful on another. I recently was looking at photos of a new Nissan GTR in charcoal that was for sale locally, it looked like a shapless blob till I saw it in the flesh, the same effect with my GTO (in my signature) I wanted a bright red one  as you do but after a year or so I finaly appriciated the colour that I got, as in the flesh the lines look far sexier than the bright red Italian style colour.

Hi,
yes it was steve walkers, the guy who owned it when it was at the NEC was keith oxley. it was a nice low mileage car, but has with most VIP's had been resprayed, it had also had a small shunt on the near side front some time in it's life.
