Nooo...that colour's got to go!

Hi All,

Those of you who have set eyes on my V8 may remember the paint colour...something approximating to...

inflicted on it by an obviously colour-blind PO as an interpretation of Tobacco Leaf. Apart from the bonnet which is still original...except for the relief map of the Andes showing prominently in various places.

You can see the colour difference here...

So now I've got a good bonnet to fit (thanks chrisw) it's time for a respray. But what colour? :?:

I don't really want to go back to Baccy so I've thought about Cameron Green or Corsica Blue, but blues and greens don't really thrill me. Red? Monza's a bit too red for my liking but I do quite fancy a deepish burgundy. What's Venetian Red like in the metal? However, I'm not overly bothered about keeping to a 1973 Rover colour, or...not necessarily..even a Rover colour  .

What do you think guys? Any suggestions? Vinyl Roof and buckskin interior's staying by the way...these I do like!

Cheers,

Unless you change the roof colour to black you're limited to the colours that will work with the brown roof, which are white, mexico tobacco leaf, and almond in the rover range of colours, and that apples to any non Rover colours you might think of.
Blues, greens, reds will all clash with that brown roof IMHO.

Out with the Vinylkote and a brush methinks.......

Tobacco leaf my not be the colour of first choice, but keeping it does make things easier, and with the brown roof and tints I think they look pretty good.

Thanks Harvey...yes the roof's a good point, but I won't let it limit me. If it doesn't work with the body colour I want then I'll change it...(and the significant other will no doubt have her fourpennorth! ) White's about the only one in your list that I'd perhaps be tempted by...maybe.

Tobacco Leaf's not really an easy option as far as body colour as all the door shuts, valances, and pillars have been done in Caramac too, so all the door cards, seals, trim pads etc. etc. etc. need stripping out anyway. Bumpers are already off...don't you just love overrider bolts! :D

Cheers mate,

How about Jaguar 'Regency Red'...? It's a lovely deep shade and perfectly in period...

Hmmm...yeah, quite like that!

Thanks!

But, P6s were never painted Jag regency red .... a colour change out of the Rover range will crab it ... its better left alone.

If you fancy red, go a Rover P6 red .... check out Rudiger's link with all the paint varients (not sure if link is still on this site since opening forum out to SD1 and Metro owners). If you fancy cameron green, I have got enough cellulose to paint a P6 inside and out in my workshop ... yours for cheap money.

I personally think P6s need vibrant colours -- avacado, paprika, saffron!! Good set of alloys, slammed and livened up!!

...but they were never painted in Caramac either before this one

Yep...I mentioned Venetian Red.

Anybody got any pics of Venetian to post? Or is the pic on Reudiger's site a fair repro?

Cheers,

Internet pics are never a good match ...... paint is hard to visualise, you either have got or you havnt. Reds are a funy colour, often going powdery and needing mopping and going different shades by panel.

Dark colours need excellent finishing with reard to getting panels straight. The darker the colour, the straighter the car needs to be. As stated before, lively, vibrant, light colours are good.

Its always the same, the P6 range was 1970's tastes personified. The best colours of the 1960s were now updated and frankly often horible .. tobacco, Mexico, corsica, cameron!! So you are stuck with a 1970s car and wish to paint it, but hate the correct colour range ..... the safe option is red or blue (boring boring boring) and white is too plain!!! Go for Saffron or avacado!!!

Saffron will take a buckskin interior!

I personally would rip the old vinyl off the roof, which by now has faded and is probably festering in places underneath, paint the car avacado, put in ebony trim, custom carpets, black vinyl roof, lower it and slip in a hotwire 3.9 or 4.2 manual!! That would signal goodbye caramac ..... you have a hard decison. But dont be led by an old vinyl roof!!

My car had buckskin flatpleat, full length webasto and was green. I threw 90% of the panels away, bought another car for seats alone, painted it a completely different colour, threw the engine away and broke a top notch SD1 Vitesse for its engine (SD1's are crap though). 90% of my car is not original, but it looks a stout motor .... to be lead by a bit of vinyl on the roof is madness!!!

Yep...thanks TP...hear what you say. Unfortunately I've yet to get beyond 3 numbers on the Lottery!

Anyway...I'm (almost) coming round to considering Mexico! :)

By the way...if you read my reply to Harvey. I did say the roof wouldn't limit me.

Cheers,

I would opt for the paprika, it's a stunning colour that gets lots of looks from the general public rather than the avocado, but to be fair I would always regret not painting it avocado, its just such a contrasting colour to the other boring colours that abound on motor vehicels of any era.

mine in red

Note the lack of a vinyl roof  paint would be cheaper than a replace

You really want to chose a colour that compliments the Buckskin interior.

That rules out Almonds, whites, grey though it is your car so your choice.

Dark colours like the cameron green, richelieu red, Scarab Blue are lovely with your interior, you can try Vinylkote on the roof or just whip it off and swap it.

A friend did a P6 in MG Tartan red a few years ago which looked stunning.

Having been in your place and also having owned a Baccy leaf car I know how hard it is. If you're up for it you can do anything you like. I do like gun metal Grey.

Thanks Graeme,

There's no half-measures with Avocado...it either does it for you or not. A bit too Seventies for me! I remember the bathroom suites in it that sprouted up everywhere as well! 8)

Thanks Colin,

How do you get on with your Richelieu? I know reds can be a bit difficult to keep looking tip-top.

I must admit Scarab Blue with black quarter panels does looks good and, as you say, would go well with Buckskin.

Where do you get Vinylkote from these days? I've emailed Kolorbond but no reply...must give them a ring.

Cheers,

Richelieu is pretty good, even when tired a quick wash down makes it look great. The darkness of the shade lefts you away with murder.

Frost.co.uk have stuff that will do, check out online, not sure about external vinyl paints but have the interior type.
