Noisey power steering

When very cold first thing in the morning - ie recently - the power steering makes a bit of a racket for about a minute. Is this normal or a sign of imminent failure!

I used to have that with one of mine, and sometimes it would even blow the fluid out through the breather in the reservoir cap.

I'd start by renewing the filter. I wouldn't be unduly concerned for the moment, change the filter and see whether it improves after. Check the system for leaks as they can draw air in, and you could try bleeding it so see if that improves things.

Could it be the PAS belt slipping ?

Good point, always pays to check the easy things first! I'd made up my mind what kind of noise it was, without it being described.

The PAS on our P5B has always made a little noise when turning the wheel on occasion. When people ask what it is I just reply that shes singing to us. She's been singing at me for 24 years now, Bless.

Had a quick twang of the belt - does seem a bit slack. Another job for when the thermafrost thaws

Mine squeaks for a while on start up, and it's a rebuilt pump (or is it?) :?

I put it down the the fact that it's not run enough at the moment.

It soon quiets down on the road.

The vane carrier within the pump can be a likely culprit.

Once warm, the noise from the pump soon diminishes.

mines noisey when i first start up too...just got her out of the garage and decided to see if the fluid was low...was greeted by a 4 foot high fountain of frothy orange fluid shooting out the relief valve...now i know thats not meant to happen!!

the power steering fluid is bright orange froth..is this due to age or is something whisking it up??

jon

left it half an hour and the fluid was normal??not frothy anymore...left car running for a bit and moved the steering back and forth...nothing...everything was fine???...the projectile frothy stuff happened within 30 seconds of starting up a very cold car...not been started since sat....only thing i did different was rocking the steering back and forth to listen to the droning noise coming from the pump...i usually drive straight out the garage and then let it tick over while i shut the garage up and lock the gates etc...by then the noise has usually gone

now why didnt i think of that...i didnt see a big orange bloke come and slap me round the ears...these p6`s are just full of suprises!!

well it did nearly hit me in the face when i opened the bonnet! Washed the front wing straight away, does ps fluid have the same charming paint stripping properties as brake fluid?
