No lights

Ok I have just bought myself a p6 3500 1972. while driving home found out I only had side lights. these would go out when turning the light switch but come back on after a coulple of mins. I Don't get any main lights but am able to flash the full beam. Looked into the fuse box and found that the lighting wires and been removed from the box and wired to a 50amp fuse? surely should be a 25amp.?Also found in the fuse box a lot of solder probably to keep the fuses in. Any advice would be good as I am a novice.

Have a look at the wiring diagram in the back of the owners handbook. Their is a thread at the top of the Electrics section which explains making a new fusebox. The flasher circuit is slightly different from the main beam circuits sounds like either the fuse rewiring is not correctly aligned or there is a dud connection in headlight wiring feed circuit. Hard to tell without seeing it. I'd investigate teh fusebox first.
