No Brake Lights!

Hi,

I noticed on my drive into work today that I have no brake lights - at 7am it made for a very nervous, cautiously braking commute....woke me up more than the usual double espresso....

Anyway, workshop manual is at home (useful), and I need to drive back tonight - could anyone point me in the direction of first things to investigate - I'm assuming fuse (which one?) first, then switch (where is it/how does it operate/fail?) secondly, and presuming that both bulbs haven't died simultaneously that is last in my check list - anything else obvious that I should check? Ideally I'd like to limit time in the cold outdoors fiddling...

I've not noticed anything else electrical not working, emphasis on the 'noticed'...

Cheers

Hi Joe,

Most likely culprit is the brake light switch. You'll find it within the engine bay on the right hand side, roughly in the same line as the booster, but closer to the master cylinder. If your Rover has power steering, look under the low pressure hose.

If you don't own a brake hose clamp, you'll lose brake fluid when you remove it, not to mention allowing air to enter the system, so bleeding will be necessary.

I changed mine very quickly, and didn't bleed the system. It works fine 8) If you do lose any fluid though, it will be necessary to bleed the system and takes forever.

You can check it however; by turning the ignition on, removing the wires and touching them together. If the brake lights come on, the switch is FUBAR, if it doesn't then you'll have to look elsewhere

It was actually bad connections on the switch, a little bit of cleaning and I now have brake lights again, great!

Many thanks for your help.

Cheers
