Newbie looking for a P6 3500S manual

Hiya everybody. I'm new to the forum and thought I'd introduce myself. I'm currently living in Suffolk but am moving to Edinburgh in a couple of months to start a new job. I'm looking for a P6 3500S manual in excellent condition to use as an everyday car. I've seen a few on various websites but have been just too slow to even get a look in. I tried the 'for sale' link on the website here but I think the links are broken as nothing is coming up on any category. If anyone has a car that matches my requirement please let me know. Cheers everyone and I look forward to drawing on all of your experiences in my search for a car.

Thanks tantus pedis. I've got that website bookmarked and keeping an eye on several examples there. Don't see too many red V8s though :)

Hi, thanks for pointing out the problem with the for-sale section, I've fixed it now, there are 3, 3500s' on there at the moment.

Well I'm off to look at a car tomorrow (Thursday). It looks fairly good and I'm going armed with my torch, magnet and bradawl (having studied the buyers guide to the nth degree). Wish me luck!

cheers

I wish you luck indeed Dave...hope it's a good 'un!

But (and I'm sure you know this! :) )...don't be afraid to walk away if you have any doubts. I know what it's like when you really want it to be straight!

Sure it'll be great though...good luck again!

Cheers,

Thanks Vaultsman (and everyone else who was psychically sending me luck vibes)

I'm back from viewing the car and it is a very good 'un. Structurally sound in all areas, engine runs fine, interior is good and the history with the car is encyclopaedic! It's not perfect but for a 37 year old car it's pretty damn good. I want to be able to put my own mark on it too so there's scope for improvement.

So I'm now the (ever so) proud owner of a P6 3500S manual MFH 511L

The guy at the garage is going to service the car, renew the waxoil and give it a full valet. I had a good chat with him about the history of the car and it's been owned locally by someone who has clearly looked after it.

I'm now looking forward to driving it home when it's ready.

I'll let you all know how I get on

cheers

Welcome along Dave3066
Nice looking car. Front bumper looks a bit twisted, if you're looking to swap it make sure your replacement bumper comes from a V8 car, the front bumper from a 2/2.2 donor won't fit. Hope you enjoy Rovering in your new ride.

That's the same year and body spec as our first "S"; JOT 7 L. I happen to think this colour scheme looks absolutely georgeous - with the black sills and 1/4 panels it can look drab, but with Huntsman looks really classy. Should be 10.5:1 engine too I think?

Well done, now enjoy!

Chris

Thanks for all the comments folks.

I wasn't sure about the colour until I saw the car for real and you're right, it's gorgeous. Turned lots of heads on the test drive.

How would I tell if the engine is a 10.5:1? Can I tell by the handbook or will the engine serial number give it away?

I'm looking forward to seeing you all at forthcoming meets, though I'm not sure if I'll make Tywcross Zoo in June as I'll be moving up to Scotland about then. If I can make it I'll see you there.

cheers

Very nice - same year and spec as Thunderdog.

No tax to pay either by the look of it - just got my tax reminder

Folks

I finally took delivery of my car (scroll back on the thread for details). I will put some pics on soon. The car performed (almost) impeccably on the journey from Chesterfield to Edinburgh, a journey of about 200 miles. This is more than can be said for my 'modern' car which broke down on the A1 and went back home on the back of a breakdown truck. It was quite amusing to be sitting on the hard shoulder of the A1 with a Vauxhall Vectra and a Rover P6 and have the Vectra not going :) The Rover got lots of admiring looks from passers by.

Ok then the main issues I have to tackle are:

The front n/s foglight comes on with the brakes..... :? bizarre! I suspect the o/s foglight would come on too but is not working.
When foglights are selected on lighting switch all the lights go off!
Both indicator warning lights on the dash flash when indicating left and right.
I had a flickering brake warning light (which I hear is quite common)
The speedo needle oscillates by about 5-10 mph

and that was it.....

Not bad I thought and certainly nothing I can't handle.

Any thoughts on possible solutions before I go delving into the wiring diagrams and grab the DMM would be gratefully appreciated.

Fuel consumption for the run was about 25 mpg and its acceleration surprised the owners of a few performance cars. :D

cheers Dave

That shouldn't take a lot of sorting, possibly a couple of bad earths/dodgy bulbs etc. the fog light position should switch the headlamps off & the front fogs on but leave the sidelights on hope this helps

Regards Colin
