My boot lid won't stay up.....

With apologies to Charlie Drake and his non returning boomerang. I can see a "bent" metal piece across the front of the boot lid which I am assuming is a form of spring to counterbalance the lid. But it only half balances it and the lid tends to creep down as you are searching in dark corners for things left in the boot. Is there a sprung balancing system to keep the lid up? Does it need full mechanical workshop handling or can it be done at home in the garage?

Excellent, thank you I will check in the boot for the hinges and the bars.....before the lid creeps down on me!

Even with the correct torsion bars, many boot lids struggle to stay up. Of course the bars have had a long life mostly in the closed position.

If you’re not too bothered about originally a simple trick is to remove the lid lining as its weight is often enough to make the lid drop & it may stay up pretty well without it in.

as an aside - I had a pneumatic ram installed down the left hand side ,so it stays open with little effort even with the tyre mounted on the lid

My boot lid has the 'store the spare on top' kit, and this by itself is on the edge of closing the boot on a user, unless you use the support stay to latch it open....then you have to explicitly release the 'latch' to close it, or chance damaging things. the torsion bars do rotate somewhat in supports, so try lubricating these points, work the boot op n down some, can help.

Thank you for all these comments and I have now peered deep into the boot and seen the torsion bars. I have also found on Youtube a guy from the West Coast Classic Cougar Club tightening his bars on a 67-70 Cougar/Mustang which makes it look easy but he did take the back seat out and you certainly need the right tool. A project for after the rally which starts on Monday 2nd October so the countdown is on! Drove the car for 124kms on Sunday last over mountainous roads in the Greek Peloponnese region which is where the rally goes and the car performed very well. New set of tyres goes on this week plus a workshop visit to finish minor stuff.

G'day....yes that is exactly what the title did for me! I see you are in "Southern Oz" so I would like to get in touch when I return to Sydney in November. By that time we will have done the six day rally and found out how the car performs and probably what it might need for repairs etc. Always on the look out for spares and advice.
