Momo "Indy" wood wheel fitted.

Bought a "Momo Indy" wood steering wheel on ebay the other day thoroughly expecting it to be a lump of junk when it arrived.

Got it today and am very very pleasantly surprised, has a selection of wear marks etc but is in far better condition than I was expecting and the boss turned out to be the correct fitment for the P6 so it fitted straight on with the only change being moving the old indicator cancelling piece over from my old wheel. The screws mounting the wheel to the boss are rather dull and corroded but it should be easy enough to get some fresh replacements for these.

Feels so much better to drive with the smaller wheel on too, much less like being the captain of the titanic with the huge old one and yet not so small as to adversely effect stability. It does get in the way of the dials somewhat but not to the point of this becoming a problem either, just the rev counter that is slightly obscured from my driving position.

I'm also really happy with how it improves the look of the cabin, I know wood wheels are not everyone's cup of tea but I'm very happy with the results especially for the $39 + $19 shipping that it cost me! :)

I'm not entirely sure what sort of age the wheel is, it looks pretty period to me and i think it fits quite well with the car. Anyone know any more about these wheels/what sort of era they were made?

Here's some pics of after and before, and the condition of my old wheel with the horrible plastic cover that had been put over it removed.

Cheers,

Al

Hello Al,

I think that it looks great too... :)

Just noticed where you have the choke. I have not seen one located in that position before. With your air conditioner, both the choke and the reserve knob are usually fitted into a metal plate on the driver's side of the unit. Is the reserve knob still down there?

Ron.

Mine's in the same spot as Al's Ron.

My fuel reserve tap is to the right (so yes, driver's side) of the air con unit. I suspect that Al's is the same as he has the same unit as me (buggered if I know how it works though, must read the instructions one day).

Nope, mine seems to have had the reserve tap removed - at least I certainly have not been able to find it at all yet.

The only button/control I have to the right of the air conditioner other than the heating/vent controls is a button that operates the screen wash spray. Not sure why this has been moved from its standard position but can only presume it has malfunctioned at some stage and has been relocated there to a new button as an easier fix.

Cheers,

Al

Made from the early 1960's until now, that exact wheel was OEM on Mazda Roadsters ( MX5 ) until about '95 when airbags became compulsory Abarth Fiats had MoMo steering wheels in the mid 60's Subaru still use MoMo steering wheels on Impreza + Legacy models in Japan. Mitsubishi Evo's too
