Lighting Issues

Hi Folks

I have a strange problem with my main beem ,if I turn the main beam on ,it will only operate on the outer headlights ,however if I operate the flasher ,only the two centre lamps flash ,I have checked the fuses ,and had the main beam/dip switch off and cleaned it ,but I am not sure if it is faulty ,plus when I turn the main beam on the main beam light on the dash does not come on .

To me this points to a faulty switch ,or a bad earth somewhere ,has anyone else had this problem ?

cheers

Adam :)

Update ,I have just checked the voltage to the inner high beam ,and I am getting no power to the fuse ,so it would seem I have a faulty switch

It's been a while since I delved into the electric, but I do seem to remember that the fused for 1/. inner headlights and 2/. outer headlights are piggy backed. So the headlight switch turns on the outer and the flasher turns on the inner. BUT, the tops of the fuses are connected so both ways should illuminate both sets.

Seems like there is a break between the two. What can happen is that the electricity will flow down one side but not connect too well with the other side of the fuse cap.

I'll draw you a picture later to show what I mean

Aha !! That would explain alot !! as I had to bypass the outer lamp fuse ,as the holder was starting to melt ! I put a modern blade like fuse holder in line ,So I will have to connect the inner lamps to this new fuse holder !!

I found a pic (but the numbers are wrong :) )

Ignore the numbers, the flash sends power down the brown wire, and through the fuse from the left hand contact and to the inner headlights. The headlight switch sends power down the right hand contact (of the one marked 23) and down through the fuse to the outer headlights.

What should happen is that the power feeds through the top of the fuses and lights up the other two lights. But in your case it seems to be not working. The join is actually a solid piece of brass making up the fuse holders, so should be ok, but there maybe a problem with the fuse cap actually connecting properly with the brass.

I hope this makes sense.

8) Yes, that would do it :)

Yes, connect the top of the new fuse holder, (input bit) to the top of the inner fuse.
