Landcrab Project

Other cars use a chain drive from the torque converter to the gearbox including I think a 7 litre FWD American car and Saabs
I wouldn't worry about the chain ,it wasn't ever a known weak point as far as I recall

Leyland Australia actually fitted the Rover V8 (transversly) to the 1800 to evaluate its potential for the aussie market, and I'm not sure if it was fitted to the standard gearbox with chain drive (or maybe the gearbox for the 6cyl engine, not exactly sure). But the arrival of the Leyland P76 saw Leyland develop the 1800 into the Austin Tasman/Kimberly (with squared off front and rear body) with the six cylinder E Series OHC engine. see; http://www.aronline.co.uk/x6picsf.htm

Hi Scott, as far as I know the 1800 & 2200 used the same auto box but the casings were different for mounting to the bottom of the engine, I'd never heard of the proposed V8 version
There is a Kimberley about 15 miles away from me it's a kind of pinky beige colour & is in really nice condition but the owner is very snobby about it & tells everyone that it's not just a Landcrab with a different nose & tail Well sorry Eddie but it is
I would love one of the Australian pick-ups, sorry Utes, I'm surprised they never released them over here because they look so practical, there was one on ebay recently but it was crazy money & was still "over there"
Regards Colin

(apologies) the prototype (leyland australia) 1800 fitted with the rover v8 was actually fitted nth/sth not transversly as i stated earlier, i have just looked at the photo again (of motor and auto g/box on a bench) in the book (about the p76) and it shows the front drive shafts definately coming off at right angles to a nth/sth configuration with accompanying text; "The only external difference between it and a standard 1800 was a 116mm extension of the front mudguards and bonnet"

for info if anyone is interested the book is titled 'LEYLAND P76, The Definitive Guide To Australia's Most Controversial Car' by Hal Moloney (published by Marque Publishing Company, www.marque.com.au )

Regards,

An extended Landcrab must have looked a bit like an Austin 3 litre .
Wonder what gearbox it used to be mounted N-S and front whel drive ?

more than likely with the 116mm extension, although the book i refered to only gave a picture of the engine/gearbox arrangement and not a picture of the body (more delving into required), i'll try and post the pic of the engine set up,

Regards,

I wonder why they went into the trouble of lengthening etc. to fit the engine like this.
If they kept the engine sideways it would fit straight in without any need for expensive modifications.
Or at least so i assume since the V8 will fit sideways at the front of a Mini Clubman on top of a Princess transmision.
Take a look here: http://www.geocities.com/jharkola/Viku2.html

I've just looked at that  that's mental. I can remember about 125 years ago there was an autocross event just up the road & there was 2 V8 Minis & a V8 Anglia, I never saw under the bonnets though, I think I still have the programme somewhere with a list of entrants.

Regards Colin

I have seen a Rover V8 powered mini pick up at a grass track meeting. I didn't win anything though, the normal minis walked all over it. :?

I also saw a Rover V8 powered Morris Minor at a hill climb made by a chap called Nick Mann (I think). It had a single turbo and nitros oxide. That won everything :D :D

I have seen a Rover V8 in a Trike (real rat bike), and even in a motorcycle, yes a two wheeler.

I have a photo somewhere of a small block chevy in a motorbike (saw it in a car park in Holmfirth) - now that is scary.

Hi 2diesels, here is the 1800 v8 pic as promised earlier sourced from the book as mentioned earlier, as you can see the v8 would have been sitting north, south, about to fall off the bench by the looks of it!

Regards,

That doesn't look like a landcrab BW35 (transverse FWD BW35TA) it's more like a Saab longitudenal (?) FWD BW35TB

Interesting, though I have to agree with Harvey that aint a normal "crab" box it's the wrong way on

Now how do I shoehorn that setup into the old girl?

no worries, I'll get the book out from the local library again and see what write up there is and copy and paste info, but if I remember there was not a lot of write up about it,

regards
