It's getting hot in here - Heater control

Squashed Nose

I found out why the wipers were defunct. The fuse was missing. Having replaced it, I find that I am unable to turn off the heater. That explains why the fuse was missing!

The control rod for the heater appears to be siezed. It moves up and down with the control but feels like a solid rod, only flexing in movement, indicating that a linkage or WHY is siezed in place. As the rod disappears into the bulkhead I am at a bit of a loss.

Advice please, gentlemen.

Squashed nose,

Look under the bonnet behind the engine at the heater box. The rods are attached to small pivoting levers on the sides of the box that have further rods going to the internal mehanism, (you may have to peel back some padding first to see them).

Chances are the levers will have stuck. If you can't move them, they may have flexed back on themselves (usually if someone's had the heater box out & hasn't noticed). If this is the case you'll have to study the limited movement & apply logic as to which way the levers should be flipped. No cost involved, but a bit fiddly!

One step forward, one back.

I found the intricate actuating mechanisms on the nearside of the heater box, applied WD40 and a pair of adjustable pliers and, Bingo. The levers all move freely and appear to be carrying out their respective mechanical duties within the heater box.

Unfortunately, the heater will still not turn off and it only blows on one speed, which I believe is the highest.

This has to be an electrical problem, surely?

Whilst in the process of locating the mechanisms, I removed the extremely nasty glass fibre wadding from around the heater box. Presumeably this is some bizzare form of heat shield. Now that we're firmly in the 21st century, is there a more pleasant alternative which I could employ?

Squashed nose,
The slower speed not working is, hopefully, the same as mine was - a wire pulled off the spade connection at the speed control lever inside the console (easily dislodged apparently).
If you're unlucky, the resistor that is used to reduce the speed has gone and it can only be reached by taking the heater unit out according to the manual (you don't want to do that!)
Sound deadening felt as used in all after-market sound deadening kits (see Exchange & Mart for suppliers) would probably do the job.
Regards, John.

Squashed nose,

A possible reason why the heater wont turn off is if there is a short by passing the switch.

As John say check the bullet connector behind the switch, the live wire could have an earth contact, same wire could also have worn and is in contact with the body.

The switch could be faulty too. try playing about with the bullets for the swith and see if it goes off or slows in speed.
