Irratic Temperature

Ive got a 3500 series 2 car and I recently cleaned out the cooling system and replaced a few worn pipes. I fitted a new thermostat after finding there was not one even fitted! since I got the car back on the road I have noticed that from cold the car runs up to temperature and the temp needle then travels all the way up to the very top of the green section of the the gauge. It doesnt go into the red or show any signs of overheating and then almost immediatly the gauge goes down agin and settles just into the green way below half where it seems to stay. I not seen this behaviour an a previous car so cant imagine its normal. Any ideas, doesnt seem to be a problem though but it does seem odd.

sounds like the thermostat is opening when it's high in the green then letting the water flow round at which point it drops....

is it the right temperature?

Rich.

Hello Casper,

As Richard has asked, what is the temperature of the thermostat...82, 88 degrees C? Did it have a jiggle pin or did you drill a 3mm hole in it prior to fitting? If it does or you did then the thermostat is likely a dud and you will need to replace it. If it did not and you didn't then you may well be getting a vapour lock and you will need to drill the hole at the 12 o'clock position.

If it still acts up, the only option is to remove it and fit another one.

Ron.

what temp should the thermostat be then? and what is a giggle pin? Also I have not had the car long, when I bought it I was told it had a Rover SD1 engine which appar3ently was 10bhp more than the original. Its still a carb engine so it probably is an early one, what difference would that make if any?

Hi,

dont think there's much difference.

Normally the stat is 82 degrees i think...

The jiggle pin is i little hole with a pin threaded through it to allow some flow even when the stat is closed...

It fits on to the laughing shaft..........

Summer stat should be 82 degrees, Winter 88, but if you don't get overheating problems you can use 88 all year round.

And opens the chortle valve on the Nitrous Tank 8)

I use the 82c one as I don't drive it much in the winter (or any time at the moment  ) and it always site dead centre in the green between the 8 and the 5.
