Hi all,

Bought my 1969 Burnt grey P6 2000 a couple of years ago & came across this site recently. When I registered, I discovered that I had already registered about a year ago!...

I purchased my car in Penrith. Its a little rough, but since buying, I have replaced the interior, and given it a general tidy-up.

Most recently I changed the Motor (now a TC) and Gearbox, as well as doing a lot of work on the reasr brakes. Three days later we drove to Adelaide & back for a national Rover Rally. The car went like a dream, except for a leaking rear ZBrake Calliper (Oh well... I guess I'll be doing those brakes again).

The car needs a paint, but for the time being, that can wait, as I prefer to use and enjoy the car as much as I can.

Looking forward to catching up with fellow enthusists.

Welcome back! That's lovely, my first Rover was a '69 SC in burnt grey with a sandalwood interior so I have quite a soft spot for the colour scheme. Mine was also converted to TC and I imagine that yours is a NZ assembled one too. Ahh, happy memories. :D

Hi ,

I believer my car is a British assembled imprt to Australia. It still had English plates, VGF224M, attached when I picked it up, although some of the letters/numbers were missing.

Someone had painted the missing figures back in, as I have done some investigation and believe that the letter "M" at the end should be "H" (VGF224H).

The car was also registered in Australia as a 1967. I have looked into the Chasis & Engine numbers and confirmed that it was the 35th last car built in 1969. Who knows what I'll find out next!!

Thanks !
Andrew

Interesting, the first 3 digits of the chassis number will reveal all.
400- means UK home market. That would make it a private import at some point in it's life and explain the UK plates.
401- means UK built for export, which would have been sold new in Oz,
and 402- means CKD kitset, most likely NZ built and sold new in Oz too. The UK plates could have been added by a former owner for show use of course, especially if they are 'M'.
Do you have any more pics? I'd love to see the rest of it. :)

Hello Andrew,

Hi all,

I have checked the Chasis number - 40104561J.

All P6s in Australia that were fitted with mirrors, had them fitted to the doors and never on the front wings. This was a requirement of our Design Rules, and combined with the Number Plates still makes me believe that the car may have been sold in England, and then privately imported.

It was a fairly common practice for Australians, who were temporarily working overseas, especially in the UK. They would order a car in Australia and collect it in the UK on arrival. They would then bring the cars to Australia on their return.

My father did this while working for the RAAF. We moved to London, then afterwards to plymouth. He collected a Brigade Red 2000TC on our arrival. The car stayed with our family until about 2 years ago, when it finally succumbed, and had to be scrapped. Unfortunately it had too much rust & couldn't be saved. Although I did manage to keep a lot of parts & panels, so she's still (mostly) with me. In fact, some parts have already made their way into my car.

Andy
