HELLO!

Hi all,

My name is Rich from Chesterfield, Derbyshire. I've had a few modern Rovers and been member of MG-Rover.org for years so know how much help (and fun) these forums can be.
Towards the end of last year I finally bagged me a P6. AWH 491L didn't look too bad and blasted the 80 miles home with no problems but as I started to remove the under seal it was revealed that there had been some serious (and dangerous) bodge jobs been done over the years. The inner sills were made of newspaper, putty, filler and topped with a thick layer of underseal to name but one.
So my quick fix has become a labour of love (or stupidity if you speak to her indoors) and I'm looking forward to asking you all lots of quesions like "whats this and where sould it go?" :D

Welcome, nice looking car! hopefully the defered and dodgy maintenance won't put you off to much as these are the most drivable of classics and when to spec perform extremly well.

Graeme

Welcome Rich

I actually bought my P6 from a garage in Chesterfield, also on an "L" plate. Is your's an early enough one to be tax exempt? Some interesting "features" on your car. It looks like a Series 2, has got a Series 2 bonnet and chrome side strips but a Series 1 grill and a strange strip down the centre of the bonnet?

Anyway from what you've said these are the least of your worries. Don't worry too much though because these cars are simple to work on and fairly easy to repair with time, patience and the help of this forum. Lots of photos will help those with the most experience here give you an assessment and there are many step by step guides buried in the depths of the forum (easily found with a quick search). Do you have a workshop/garage to work in or are you at the mercy of the weather?

Good luck with the car, it'll be back on the road before you know it and you'll wonder what all the fuss was about, just ask Mr Task  :D

Hi i was like you purchased a rover just to have fun in and found that there was lots of rust in cills and floor area , but now ive learnt to weld and all has been replaced with replacement repair cills and is as solid as arock now, but im a guy that before i owned the rover never lifted the bonnet on my cars, i just could be bothered , but i must say these rovers even though dont always do what you want are great fun to work on and ive enjoyed every minute of it, so enjoy your car and the repairs, i do like the series 1 grill on the front.
welcome

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the welcome.
You didn't buy you P6 from The Spinning Wheel by any chance did you? Mine is tax exempt and is a series 2, the strip on the bonnet appears to be a side strip that was held on by two screws and a bent nail!! There was also a luggage rack on the back but that and the S1 grill went on Ebay.
I've replace the passanger side inner sill and a few other bits, the drivers side sill may be patchable but as I've done one I may as well do the other. I have a garage but its not really big enough to work in so I'm in squirrel mode collecting parts for when the weather improves.
I'm sure I'll be on here soon armed with photos and many quesions for you Rover Gurus :D

Coo! You have the holy grail steering wheel! The 17" wood rim wheel is extremely rare in the UK - vanishingly so with no cracks in the rim! And commands a huge price to match! And you've got the wooden gear knob to go with it. And the optional rev counter. Shorn of the less salubrious "extras" that looks a realy nice motor!

Chris

Well, that's had a few 'creative' mods! Still it looks like a fairly solid example though. I don't think that's a factory wooden gear knob Chris, it's a modern add on. And are those rear overriders off an early Triumph 2000? Haven't seen that before.

Yes, plenty of those gearknobs on fleabay. There are cracks in that steering wheel, but the one on our aircon car is well-worn too (a bit more than yours). They're only worth slightly into three figures which won't buy you very much, so hang on to it & revel in the rarity.
But for Christ's sake, get rid of those badges above the number plate!

Yes indeed it was Spinning Wheel. I bought it in May 2009 just before prices started to go up :D

Good to see you're cracking on with the work. As others have said, some interesting "optional extras" on your car. Leave them or get rid of them, your choice. They all serve to personalise it as yours :D

I get that too. :) Then I remind her that I don't moan about her horse.

Looks like you've got a good base for a nice car. With a car of that age you'll always find some welding to do.

 Thanks for that I'd never noticed, after stripping off the luggage rack and all the badges I always thought it looked slightly odd but couldn't put my finger on it,I think I might keep em. I'd have liked to keep the exhaust as well but its well shot.

Hello and welcome. That looks like a superb project you've got there! I know what you mean about spares, my car came with a few bags of bits, any spare space that was in the garage is now filled with bits of P6. I need to find some front seats though. I look forward to seeing your project progress.
