Hello all from Scotland!

Hi there folks :)

My name is Tony and i am from the Kingdom of Fife, Scotland!

On Sunday i become the proud owner of a 1972 Rover P6 3500, Auto, Blue.

The car is to be our wedding car March next year.

Payed the sum of £1000 with Full Test and Tax (exempt) and picked it up from Peterlee, Durham.

Unfortunetly i only got 10 mins in a snow blizard up the road and broke down in a pile of smoke :(

Lucky for me the nice chap that i had bought it of had good breakdown cover, so got flat bedded all the way home, so a positive end to a bad start :p

Had a good look over it today and the list of important jobs grows, just hope i have not bought a duffer.

The list of obvious defects is as follows-

* Inside of car is ringing wet (all door seals are shot)
* Inside rocker covers are full of black gunge (lack of oil changes)
* Oil leaks from most places but atleast is clean oil!
* Fan belt is hanging off
* Water level in radiator very low
* Most trim and exterior panels are badly fitted or bits missing
* Carpets are wrecked and boot is not lined
* Fuel tank is rusty inside
* Bottom of exterior panels are rusty or breaking up
* Tacho is very eratic (pickup on coil i believe?)
* Cold starting is hard (Probably down to needing a good service and tune up than being worn out)
* One of the oblonged warning lights to the far left top of dash stays on when running (ignition light?)
* Rear exhaust box is hanging (Mot fail?)
* Window wiper rubbers are shot (Mot fail?)
* Fuel fillercap has no seal (Mot fail?)

Finaly if i am honest and this is in no way i think linked to the chap i bought it from, the car has been tarted up badly at some point and is showing now.

On a positive note the car goes like a rocket and for the short period on the A19, sat at 60 happily :D

Is anything i have mentioned in the bad points really bad?

I also own a 1976 Lada (LHD import though) 2102 Kombi, 1989 Renault 25 GTX and my daily runner is a 1999 Skoda Felicia 1.9 Diesel.

Look forward to talking to you all and miles of happpy Rover cruising!

Welcome to the forum Tony,
You join a growing army of scotish p6 owners on the forum, I'm sure there are a few close by, glad to hear that the breakdown hasn't dampened your spirits. Thats a nice list of things to do, nothing seems to be out of the ordinary and will be covered by a thread on this forum if not just ask and help will be at hand. Hope you have it ready for the big day, sounds like it can be a rolling resto for you, by the way we do like pics on here

Welcome Tony, any advice you will ever require on P6's will be on here. Jump in look around, get some pics up, they like pics on here.

Welcome Tony , a few scottish members active on here. You've certainly come to the right place if you get a few pic's up the help and advice will likely roll in!(not from me as i'm clueless about most car related D.I.Y.)

There are a couple of project threads from scottish members which are inspirational in showing what can be done

Bit scary at the start !!

Hi Tony

Welcome aboard

* Inside of car is ringing wet (all door seals are shot) - could be many things, but the door rubbers are obtainable and are not difficult to fit.
* Inside rocker covers are full of black gunge (lack of oil changes) - Take them off and clean them out. Can be evidence of a worn out engine, how is the oil pressure?
* Oil leaks from most places but atleast is clean oil! - Good, there's some oil in it then :D
* Fan belt is hanging off - new ones are not expensive.
* Water level in radiator very low - they run quite low as normal, fit a header tank from an SD1 or something from the same era.
* Most trim and exterior panels are badly fitted or bits missing - they are all adjustable, so have a play with them. All good fun and most rewarding when a bit of adjustment (fettling as we call it ) gives improvements for no cost.
* Carpets are wrecked and boot is not lined - get some new ones (after you have sorted the water ingress issue), be careful with ebay though
* Fuel tank is rusty inside - you can get a solution that you wash around the tank and it seals it up. You will have to remove the tank and clean it first so not a quick job, but easily repaired.
* Bottom of exterior panels are rusty or breaking up - they all bolt on/off. You can take them off one at a time, and either replace or repair at your leisure. What it the base unit like though?
* Tacho is very eratic (pickup on coil i believe?) - mine did that, just put another one on.
* Cold starting is hard (Probably down to needing a good service and tune up than being worn out) - good service will do wonders
* One of the oblonged warning lights to the far left top of dash stays on when running (ignition light?) - not an expert on them, but there are some on here who can talk you through it.
* Rear exhaust box is hanging (Mot fail?) - They are available
* Window wiper rubbers are shot (Mot fail?) - They are available
* Fuel fillercap has no seal (Mot fail?) - cap and filler tube on ebay at the moment

We love to help but we do need pics, we love pics :D

Richard

Thanks for the feedback folks :)

I will look up how to load pictures and hopefully post them on Fri when i get my camera back!

The underside is covered in old under seal but i reckon with a good steam clean it should all come off and can be re applied, if it just passed an mot it should be fine anyway :?

It has been welded before or more roughly patched than a seamless repair and the oil pressure was high when cold and reved but would fall straight away and sit at 15 no matter what the speed. Seems a bit low :?:

I have always liked the P6 and i had a Land Rover series three (Stage 1 edition with V8) so i am atleast familiar with this engine.

Is there any companies that stock parts, with it being a bmc even Halfords at a total loss should stock service items :?:

Hi Tony welcome to the forum

The ignition light could be because ot the ill fitting fan belt (hopefully) or if that is not the case it could be the alternator. I would suggest the fan belt as you said that it was not good.

The forum is a great place to make contacts and gain advice.

Good luck with your car and happy rovering.

Stephen

Welcome Tony,
The ignition light is red and reads IGN.
If it's yellow/amber coloured it's the choke reminder light which is meant to go out when the choke is pushed fully in.
If it doesn't, you just need to adjust the switch behind the speaker panel
MIne's a '72 V8 too. A good year :D

Hello and welcome Tony. Sounds like you have plenty to keep you busy and I would certainly agree with Richard quattro's advice on where to start. Definitely would appreciate some pic's please.

Hi and welcome! You'll get it all sorted a bit at a time. V8 service items are readily available from eBay rimmers wins and jrwadhams. The last 2 are the p6 specialists. 15 does sound low to me but I'm not sure as mine has no gauge...

Rich.

Hi Tony , welcome . They never had great oil pressure , the light flickers at around 8 psi . 15 psi hot tickover is o.k . around 30 psi at 2000 rpm would be nice but don't worry about it too much . clean oil and filter would be a good place to start . I'd have the rocker covers off with it running to , ensure the top end is getting oil . ( prone to blockage without regular changes ) Good luck .

Hello and welcome . As previously stated lots of advice on here just dont do what i did and look at all the problem posts and frighten yourself :~)

Well this weekend i will make sure i get those pictures up for your pleasure :)

The biggest thing that i am worried about now i have had good look is that all the trim is either badly fitted, missing or broken :?: Also what grade of oil do they run on, my range rover manual says 20w/50, the original manual says Castrol GTX but no actual grade and the chap has i think 10w40 which i think is far to low a grade :?:

Jim, yes 72 is good because it's road tax exempt but with the benefit of a rowdy engine :D

Thanks all so far, much appreciated :D

Hi Tony

We should start a sub-group for '72 V8s :D

Welcome to forum. It's good to see the growing number of members up our way. If you can manage to get along to this year's Scottish All Rover Rally you'll see, and speak to, many of us.

Good luck with the car

Dave

Had a read, intersesting stuff i have never even considered before. Oils have come a long way since single grade stuff :)

I shall post any further technical related questions in the correct section of this forum, so as to not annoy anyone!

Thanks all so far :p
