Heated Rear Window Switch - Help Needed

Hi

My heated rear window has not been working as all the wires on the back of the switch have been disconected and taped together with 4 / 5 other apparently redundant wires.

can anyone describe the wiring configuration on the back of the switch i.e. how many wires and what coloures they should be etc !!

I have found the power but I'm unsure how it should be correctly wired (I have tied 2 / 3 variations but I'm running out of fuses :p

I pressume it is a series 2 car right? Well the wiring diagram shows that the wires connected to the switch are colour coded SN and NY.
Now, N is for brown, Y for yellow, but i cannot find anywhere what S stands for. So, your wires should be Brown with a Yellow tracer (this one goes to the heater element) and the power supply to the switch is something with a brown tracer that is live with the ignition switch in the II position.
Mind you that perhaps you have a short circuit somewhere and probably for this reason the previous owner disconnected everything (and you keep blowing fuses). It's always worth to check with a multimeter or a test lamp if the line to the heater element is grounding somewhere.

S = Slate

There is a third wire which goes to earth to run the warning light, as you can see from this cheeky chappy inside the switch

So you should have a Slate with a Brown tracer, and a Brown with a Yellow tracer on the same level, then a black one for the warning light earth.

This is of course depending on the year and type of switch.

What colours do you have? and what type of switch is it? and what year is your car?

Hi

thanks for your help with this. The car is a 74 (s). I have the black wire and through memory the slate and brown the brown and yellow wires. I have tested the power supply and it gives a steady 12.5V. So far as can tell the switch is standard but one on the terminal posts on the back has brolen off and the wires have been soldered.

how are these connected through the switch ?

cheers

Slate/Brown is the live feed into the switch.

Brown/Yellow is the feed to the heated screen when switched on.

When on, the switch connects the Slate/Brown to the Brown/Yellow and to the bulb in the switch, which is then earthed through the black.
