gearbox removal

archeyboy is currently experiencing a lack of forward drive as you are probably aware,i managed to get him a price of £300+vat to overhaul his box if he does the removal & refitting. obviously remove/overhaul/refit would bump it up a bit,but i thought that was a good price.at least it gives him something to compare against, and its there if he needs it

Hi all

I have been working on the car and have found that the brakes were stuck on.

I have taken the front brakes off and i have now got some foward drive???????????????????????

Do you think this would stop the car from going forward but allow it to go backwards?

I am really confused so what i am going to do is put the back of the car on axle stands and see if i have drive.

I will let u know of the results.

I must say, I'm tempted to fit a manual 5-speed box as I'd like to experience the full potential of the V8, especially when I fit the Holley & I wouldn't miss the clunky gearchanging of the auto, though I know this can be down to the drivetrain. At least with a clutch pedal you can feed the power in to compensate. I wouldn't fit one to the P5B but it would suit the P6's character, I think.

Hi all

I have jacked the back of the car up this weekend and found that the left back brakes were locked on so i have released these and the car now has foward drive (on jacks).

I have read on the internet that this cannot be taken for true until the car is road tested (is this correct?).

HI ARCHEYBOY, THIS IS TRUE! I WOULD SUGGEST THAT UNTIL YOU'VE PUT THE GEARBOX UNDER NORMAL ROAD DRIVING LOAD CONDITIONS, YOU WILL NOT KNOW IF IT IS FULLY WORKING AS IT SHOULD, START WITH GRADUAL SPEED GOING SLOWLY THRU THE GEARS,THEN USE THE GEARSTICK MANUALLY FOR A BIT,TRY IT PULLING AWAY FROM STATIONARY ON A HILL!! TO SEE IF IT SLIPS OR PULLS SMOOTH THEN GRADUALLY INCREASE SPEED TO SEE HOW IT ALL OPERATES.DONT FORGET TO USE REVERSE A BIT AS WELL!! THE BOX MAY WELL WORK WHEN JACKED UP, BUT YOU MAY NOT DETECT ANY SLIPPING OF THE CLUTCHES, UNTIL ITS UNDER LOAD!

Thats what i thought the problem i have though is the car is not road worthy and i dont really want to getting it road worthy and then find i have gearbox problems. ???

one way to bypass the need for a road test is to perform a stall test.details should be in the workshop manual.this should only be undertaken with great care and really only as a last resort.a gearbox that's on its way out can easily be finished off by doing it.make sure the brakes are up to the task.read the manual carefully and follow the instructions to the letter.please note that i am not advising you to do this i'm just saying it's an option.if you do it, don't do it more than once.

HI, SEE MY EMAIL MESSAGE. I THINK YOU OUGHT TO DO A COMPLETE AND DETAILED LIST OF THINGS THAT WILL NEED DOING ON YOUR CAR FROM TOP TO BOTTOM,FRONT TO BACK EXAMINATION AND WORK OUT HOW MUCH IT WILL COST TO HAVE THE JOBS DONE, OR HOW MUCH YOU CAN DO YOURSELF TO SAVE SOME MONEY!! IF YOU PAY FOR A MECHANIC TO RESTORE ALL OF IT , YOU WILL SPEND MORE THAN IT WILL BE WORTH, IF YOU DO A LOT YOURSELF,YOU MAY GET A BIT OF YOUR MONEY BACK IF YOU SELL IT! BUT!! THATS NOT THE REASON WE ALL PLAY WITH BIG BOYS TOYS, ITS THE FUN,CHALLENGE,SENSE OF ACHIEVEMENT, ITS LIKE GOLF!! YOU WILL PAY A LOT OF MONEY TO GO AROUND A TOP COURSE, THE MONEYS GONE, BUT THE GOOD MEMORYS STILL THERE!! ITS ALL FOR THE FUN ETC...ANYWAY.. IF IT IS!! DRIVEABLE, ITS NOT LEGAL I KNOW, BUT, WHEN MINE WAS PLAYING UP, I WENT FOR A VERY SHORT DRIVE UP A VERY QUIET BIT OF ROAD IN THE EVENING, NAUGHTY I KNOW,BUT HOW ELSE CAN YOU TEST LITTLE BITS LIKE BRAKES PULLING & BOX OPERATING. JUST BE SURE YOUR SURE EVERYTHING DOES WORK BEFORE HAND. I TOOK A RISK WHEN I DID IT BUT, I DO KNOW OUR LOCAL COPPERS, ONE IS A CLASSIC NUT!!

I am aiming to do 99% of the work myself like you say a challenge.

I think i mshould be ok with most of it.

I will need to replace the brakes before i do anything else i think.

Does anone know of a supplier for back and front brakes.

Once i have done the brakes i will be able to test the car i think.

DO YOU WANT JUST BRAKE PADS?? OR RECON CALIPERS AS WELL? PADS ARE COMMON ON EBAY, FOR A 1968+ THE REAR PADS ARE ALL THE SAME, THE V8 FRONTS ARE BIGGER THAN THE OTHERS, SOME HAVE WEAR SENSOR WIRES, JUST CHOP THEM OFF IF YOU DONT NEED,WANT THEM. FRONT CALIPER OVERHAUL KITS ARE AVAILABLE BUT REAR ONES ARE HARDER TO GET, ESPECIALLY THE REAR AUTOMATIC ADJUSTER BITS

i am not sure yet as i have taken the front brake pads off at the moment and found that they where siezed so i guess i may have to overhaul the whole braking system

HOW LONG SINCE THE CAR WAS LAST ON THE ROAD?? THE FRONTS ARE FAIRLY EASY,A BIT OF WD40 SPRAYED INTO THE RUBBER PISTON SEALS AND GENTLE PUSHING OF THE PEDAL, ps,PUT A WEDGE IN BETWEEN THE PISTONS AND DISC TO STOP IT POPPING RIGHT OUT!! THEN SLOWLY SQUEEZING THE PISTONS BACK INTO THE CALIPER SHOULD FREE THEM UP EVENTUALLY, IT TOOK ME ALL DAY TO RELEASE ALL THE BRAKES ON A CAR ONCE, BUT THEY WORKED FINE AFTER THAT, IT IS OBVIOUSLY BEST TO STRIP AND RE SEAL THEM, BUT AS A QUICK FIX TO GET IT MOBILE THIS SHOULD WORK,UNLESS ITS REALLY SOLIDLY SEIZED UP!! THE REARS ARE A PAIN TO DO FIRST TIME, BUT THEY GET EASIER WITH PRACTISE!! :D

The car has been sitting for about 4 years.

The front brakes so well siezed i had to knock the old pads out as the wouldnt move.

I will try WD40 on the front brakes and see if that works.

A quick tip; I keep an old well worn pair of brake pads in my tool box for freeing off siezed calliper pistons. Simply place them in the calliper first, and they'll stop the piston popping out. I have always used WD40 for each movement of the piston, and repeated the process until no more rusty muck is coming out. I usually remove the calliper and rebuild straight away though. It's just much easier to use hydraulic pressure to remove a siezed piston than struggling for hours in a vice!

I have now purchased a good auto box from ebay and will be picking it up this weekend so hopefully this will be the end to my probs

well done !! :;): I hoped it was you that won it!! a bargain for only a tenner , its well worth having as they are hard to get. if it does turn out to be a faulty unit, £10 is not a lot to risk! if its a good un!! :p cracking deal!! when fitting it keep the torque converter in place, and bolt to flywheel once bellhousing is almost located!!keep us informed :D

Yeah thanks that was a very good spot by you :D

I was wondering if anybody shows there cars at all?

If you do are any of you going to the woking car show on the 17th june?
