gearbox removal

hi , Ive recently had my v8 autobox out and rebuilt, and it is a dead easy job to do, if!! that is,,, you have the proper tools.and a reasonably good idea what you are doing!! you will need a good high lift trolley jack, decent set of ramps, and axle stands, and a good selection of spanners and sockets. if you are pretty good with the spanners you can easily take the box out from underneath in a morning!! it took me 2 1/2hrs. basically you, disconnect prop, remove front exhaust pipes, drain water and remove rad and hoses, engine steady bar,air filter, remove bellhousing bolts, startermotor, wiring, speedo, gearlinkage, drain as much g/box fluid from oil cooler pipe/filler pipe as you can. if you disconnect the torque converter from the flywheel, you can then leave it on the gearbox, but be careful, and secure it to the bellhousing once you have enough room, by putting a bit of wood across it!! support box under sump area with a decent trolley jack and a flat bit of wood, remove box support and lower it carefully, the engine/box will tilt until the manifolds touch the bodywork, protect this area with padding/old rags, etc, then you can gently lower the box whilst sliding it back a bit at the same time, another pair of hands/mate will be useful as it is "quite heavy" and hard to handle. if you want a chat to help you through it send me an email. where are you located?? uk?? usa?? dave

i saw on your first post you have a 1972 model, this should be a type 35 box, which can be removed leaving the converter and bellhousing in situ.this makes the unit much lighter. Some also have a sump drainplug which helps but you never get it all out.Only disadvantage to this method is that oil pours from the coverter as the box is removed, and great care must be taken when refitting not to damage the front seal on the rear of the converter. I had problems on a 3.5 litre with the same box a few years back and the bloke who sorts my p6 did it no problem.he would probably be able to get the parts for you.if you get into trouble i can pass on his contact details.GOOD LUCK!

I have sourced a gearbox out of a sd1 i think it is a borg warner 65 will this be ok?

I think the engine is a 2.8i will this make a difference to the gear ratio?

do you know which box is fitted to your car? if you have type 35, to fit the sd1 box, which will be type 65,will then involve two conversions, firstly converting your car from 35 to 65 and then changing the sd1 box to p6 spec.it can all start to get a bit complicated (especially with two boxes in pieces). better i would of thought to have your box overhauled

i can ask the man who does my repairs if you like.probably will need to know which gearbox you have although i think its safe to assume it is a 35.what would you want him to do,overhaul the box that you remove & refit or remove overhaul & refit?

I have just readon here that someone else was having the same problem and they thought it might be the cables that need adjusting.

I hve tried looking on the car but dont kow which cables these are?

Can anybody help with this before i take the box out?

Hi
If you are to convert to a BW65 from a SD1 this is an easy job as the two boxes have quite the same length. I have done it twice and it was quite easy. The BW65 from a P6 are a little longer which make the job a little more difficult. With the SD1-box you can use the mountings but need to drill new holes.

Hope this helps.

i assume the cable they are referring to is the kickdown cable connected to the throttle linkage.adjusting this will only increase or decrease the working pressure within the box thus altering the shift speeds.as you have no drive anyway it wont make any difference.you must have pressure to select and obtain reverse.the only other thing i can think is the linkage is defective in some way and is not selecting drive but this is highly unlikely.we all hope in these situations its not the gearbox, but it normally is (s*ds law)

hi,archeyboy, when I got my bw65 rebuilt it cost me £440 inclusive of vat, trade price! with 12 months warranty, +£60 for buying enough castrol tqf oil as well, that was by our local expert who do all auto,s; rollers, bentlys, jags, porsche etc. I removed it and fitted it back myselfit took me about 6 hrs in total. I did notice on fitting it back, that there seemed to be a blockage in the cooler pipework from box to rad cooler, and I wonder if this would have caused my loss of drive as the pump would not work properly!! if you take the 2 pipes off the gearbox and blow them through with an airline,,,, making sure you wrap the pipe end in rags to stop it blowing everywhere!!!! ??? if it blows through easily no blockage,if its a bit stubborn like mine was, wait for the pressure to build a bit, if it wont blow through, disconnect the pipes at the rad end,and blow thro one by one then do the rad bit. try it!! it just may be the problem.good luck :D

HI, I DIDNT ACTUALLY CONNECT THEM UP, UNTIL I HAD CLEANED THEM OUT,AS THE OLD FLUID WAS BROWN, IT WAS WHILE DOING THIS I REALISED THAT THEY WERE BLOCKED!! ??? I THEN THOUGHT, I HOPE THIS WAS NOT THE REASON IT PACKED UP  AND WAS ANNOYED WITH MYSELF THAT I HADNT CHECKED IT FIRST!!, BUT  YOU LIVE AND LEARN! I HAVE HAD NO HASSLE FOR 10,000 MILES,4yrs, I WENT BACK TO THEM LAST YEAR AND HAD THE OIL FLUSHED OUT AND REPLACED, "£125" AS IT WAS SHOWING A HINT OF BROWNINESS, IT SHOULD BE A CLEAR PINKY RED AND SMELL SWEETISH. WHAT COLOUR IS YOUR FLUID ??? YOU MUST!!! !!! ONLY USE PROPER TQF,AQF OIL,ITS NOT CHEAP!!! ITS WELL WORTH A TRY AS YOU CAN DO IT EASILY ON CAR RAMPS, AND AN AIRLINE AND A COUPLE OF SPANNERS. IF IT DOESNT WORK YOU SHOULD ALSO DRAIN IT OUT AND PUT FRESH NEW OIL IN. IT COULD BE THE BEST £50 ISH YOU SPEND IF IT WORKS :D GOOD LUCK,LET US KNOW HOW IT GOES. DAVE

THE FLUID IS PINK AND NEW.

THE CAR HAS BEEN SITTING FOR 4 YEARS AND TH GUY I GOT IT FROM SAID IT HAD A LITTLE LEAK AND THE BOX WAS EMPTY SO I FILLED IT UP.

BUT IT TOOK NO WHERE NEW 8 LITRES!!
