well just though i would let u all know that my spare front swivel pillers has had its new ball joints today and what a pig to do the bottom 1 lucky my friend made a puller to take the bottom 1 out and yes it did kind of work just the bottom part of the joint was still stuck in there but the joint did come out so i have started to get it replaced the top 1's are very easy to do

Hi, would be really interesting to see photos of this - I think my front suspension is less than perfect so would love to see what's involved!

Hi all just nicking the thread. Im in the process of removing the top ball joint. Ive got the swivel off but now need to remove the top ball joint. Is it a case of just tapping around the lip were the 3 bolts are. Until it pops out or am i living in hope lol. Anyone just done one any advice is as always more than welcome.
Regards
Marcus.
Ps i covered 2150 care free miles in rosie last summer and hope to do again this summer.

Just remove the three bolts and tap the joints upwards working your way around as you go. i.e. once in one section, then once in the next etc, and just keep going round to keep it level.

It is quite easy, well compared with the lower ones it is :?

Put the new one in the freezer overnight, and warm up the leg with a hot air gun, just to warm don't get it too hot. Line the new one up with the bolt holes, and tap it gently all the way round and you'll find, if you're quick enough, that it will go in easily.

Like Richard said, i have managed to replace a top one in my TC a few years ago without any special tools.
The leg was even still on the car. You need to be patiend, trying to rush things will probably cause some damage.
It took me about a couple of hours, most of it to remove the old one, but otherwise it was straightforward.

I've seen Colin Gould do the top and bottom ball joints on a previous car many years ago.
The bottom ones were are major major pain in the arse! He had a heavy duty tool for removing the bottom joint and I remember it pulled the ball straight out of the cup, leaving the housing stuck in bottom of the leg!
You can buy reconditioned suspension legs (on exchange), with the new ball joints pre fitted and the leg painted - that is the way to go as far as I am concerned!

If your bottom ball joint is toast, then weld the ball bit onto the housing before attempting to pull it out!
