FITTING OF SPARE WHEEL ON BOOT?

& the boot's not that small.... :?

Indeed, i don't find the P6 boot at all small. I have managed to squeeze in there considerable luggage with the spare in the usual place and a big tool box too. However, i like that i have the option to move the spare on the boot lid and squeeze some more in there (junior's bicycle anyone?). For everyday it's not too practical as the bootlid is too heavy to open and close easily, you have to use the stay, the rear view from the interior mirror is not great etc. But i like to have options!

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

Im surprised that the boot mounted spare when in-situ isn't illegal, especially considering how anal health and safety is these days!

How on earth does the boot stay up with the spare mounted; Im guessing it has a retaining arm like most car bonnets?

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

Yes, the touring kit included a detachable prop rod to hold the lid up when the wheel was mounted on it. Can't see why it would be a health and safety issue, it really doesn't restrict visibility as much as you'd think and if you were going to run into the back of a P6, the wheel is a relatively soft thing to hit.
Even with a full set of headrests and the touring kit fitted, visibility out of a P6 is WAY better than most modern cars.

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

Rover P6 owners are divided into two distinct power groups !!
The "have's" and the "have nots"

ie ; those that have a boot mounted spare , are known as The " Have's"
those that have Almond cars , again The "Have's"

you all getting the gist ?

The haves are by default , generous of soul ,warm hearted , gregarious , fun loving , handsome and smell better on a hot day .
The have nots on the other hand - well . They are All quite sad really .

Gerald.

ps. odds on the price of boot mounted spare kits and Almond cars , go through the roof .
pps , Im still not selling

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

Forgive my ignorance but I don't understand the almond reference? I would definitely have a boot mounted spare...

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

Hi, the "Almond reference" is a bit of a forum in joke. Almond has turned out to be a "marmite"
thing and has resulted in some lighthearted banter amongst the two factions. (well I presume it
is lighthearted). Hard to tell some times.

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

That may have been the colour of my late grans P6 although I always thought it was more like a tobacco colour...

Just human nature, if there wasn't some difference we could all pick on we would have to invent one, and Almond is such an easy target....

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

I got a boot mounted spare on the rat---its a pain in the +++++ the lid weighs a ton with the spare on it so the kit is in the best place==bin under bench and have got a wedgewood blue boot lid off a 1964 to go on it=when I can be asked

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

Symes ,
How do you think us BMS* guys got such an over developed right arm ?. OK Ok I'll focus your line of thought about now !! Not that .
It was from lifting that ton weight on the boot .
A total gym workout is managing to alternate your arms . The word ambidextrous is a useful reference .
You can always wimp out and fit a gas filled stay from a modern . [ ahem - I have ]
That ton weight then becomes childs play and totally impresses the girls at the supermarket car park .
Of course if your P6 is Almond you would have super powers anyway and the task of opening the ton weighted boot - well Phff . Easy as stopping an out of control locomotive .

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

GRTV8,
The p6 engineers -in a mad fit of cleverness used aluminium for boot lid-to save weight-it works and also they look a lot nicer without - in my opinion anyway
also as far as almond goes---only on bakewell tarts mate --what I think you mean by almond is BEIGE----either way its an awful color on anything,
Also i hate them bars on the front full of badges--yuk mines got 2 high beam spot lights on it--only because the standard lights are useless in the dark
maybe I could modify the lights-but saving pennies for its engine upgrade instead--as sign on my garage wall says--old rovers never die they go faster :D

Interesting statement .
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder here .
I ordered Almond from the factory as well as the BMS . These were bold options from a car manufacturer in that time .
No one else was doing it . Some yank metal had a pseudo hump built into the boot . Landrover had its spare on the bonnet and later mounted on the rear door like the P6.
Almond certainly turned heads when cruising amongst the bland colours of other manufacturers in the 70's .
I don't think Ive ever had my boot in its un mounted form from day one .
In fact the badge was still in its original wax wrapper until a few years ago . I took it out only to discover something had dropped on it and broken the insert . Im not that fussed as its still not likely to get used . Not under my watch !!
To me the BMS gives the P6 an avant-garde style .

No argument there from me.

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

In High School we used to refer to Almond as "nice warm Vomit colour" then I bought a car that was that colour and I grown to like it! the fact I painted all the panels helped change my mind of course....

Couldn't agree more...

When the BMS is in position is there a rubber grommet in the boots hole to stop water entering the boot? Probably a stupid question but I dont actually own a P6 as yet...

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

Hi, no, the wheel bolts to a bracket bolted to the boot side wall.

Colin

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

They don't leak. There is an alloy cup that locks into the boot lid centre, then the wheel sits on top and is held down with a large bolt locked in place from underneath. Then the cover goes over the wheel. You're more likely to get leaks in the boot from the bolts under the rear decker panel. Or hidden rust.

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

Im still surprised that water doesn't get in when the BMS is in place as there's obviously gonna be a hole that the large bolt goes through....

..but there is also a rubber seal between the cup and the mounting plate :D
